Key Similarities

  • Durability: Both of these mattresses are crafted with high-quality materials that are designed to last up to 10-15 years.
  • Spinal Alignment: The Loom & Leaf and Purple mattresses both earned high scores for spinal alignment, meaning they keep your back in a healthy posture while you sleep.
  • Cooling: Each of these mattresses earned similar scores for cooling—both just above average, or 7.5-8/10.

Key Differences

  • Construction: The original Purple is technically a hybrid mattress, even though it doesn’t have an innerspring layer. Instead, it combines a hyper-elastic polymer comfort grid with foam layers. The Loom & Leaf is an all-foam mattress
  • Delivery: Purple mattresses are available in retail stores and online with bed-in-a-box delivery. Loom & Leaf mattresses are sold online only and come with free white glove delivery.
  • Sleep Trial: Purple’s trial period is 100 days, and Loom & Leaf’s is 365 days. Sleep trials are an opportunity for you to test out whether a mattress meets your comfort level without the risk of losing your investment if it’s not the right fit.
  • Firmness Options: The Loom & Leaf mattress is offered in two firmness levels—relaxed firm (6/20) and firm (8/10). The Purple mattress is only available in medium-firm (6.5/10), which is comparable to the Loom & Leaf relaxed firm.

Purple Mattress Review Highlights

  • Purple’s Smart Grid comfort layer provides enough instant pressure relief to cushion a raw egg under 1,400 lbs of weight. Unlike all-foam beds, the Smart Grid doesn’t require any “warm-up” period in order to contour to your body.
  • The Purple mattress cover is designed to be breathable on the top and sides, preventing heat retention in the hyper-elastic polymer and foam layers. Additionally, the shape of the Purple Grid naturally creates channels for airflow.
  • The combo of hyper-elastic polymer and multi-density foams creates the optimal level of support for keeping your posture in good form while sleeping. This results in less pain and fewer sleep disruptions.
  • Hyper-elastic polymer materials have been around since the 1990s, and they are still holding strong, unlike memory foam and poly-blend pillow tops
  • Purple uses only hypoallergenic and CertiPUR-US certified materials in their mattresses. The foam layers don’t emit off-gassing odors. Plus, they are made in the USA.

Loom & Leaf Mattress Review Highlights

  • Loom & Leaf offers their signature mattress in relaxed firm and firm options. You can get the same quality sleep experience on either, but the relaxed firm is better for side sleepers and stomach sleepers, and the firm is better for back sleepers.
  • Loom & Leaf uses the same luxury grade, eco-conscious materials as the Saatva mattress: a natural flame retardant, botanical antimicrobial treatment, organic cotton, non-toxic water-based cooling gel, and CertiPUR-US certified foams.
  • You’ll sustain good posture while sleeping in this bed, regardless of your sleeping position. Accordingly, you can expect less back pain and more comfortable sleep.
  • Mattress Advisor named the Loom & Leaf a top-rated memory foam mattress because it’s built to provide superior comfort for over a decade. Customers notice no sagging on this bed, and it’s so sturdy that it can’t be compressed and rolled.
  • This in-home set up service normally costs up to $150, but is free for Loom & Leaf customers. The delivery team will set up your new mattress (and Loom & Leaf bed frame, if applicable), and remove your old mattress.
  • The designers at Loom & Leaf intentionally included a layer of cooling gel memory foam to regulate the temperature of the mattress; the cooling gel neutralizes your body heat.

Compare the Inner Layers

The type of material a mattress uses can make all the difference in how it will feel. The Purple Mattress consists of layers of foam and Purple’s special GelFlex™ Grid. All of Purple’s mattresses include this super-stretchy grid, creating a comfortable, adaptable bed.

The Loom & Leaf is your traditional all-foam mattress with several layers of memory foam. Saatva uses a combination of high-density memory foam with a transitional foam layer for the perfect combination of support and comfort.

When it comes to feel, the Purple Mattress and Loom & Leaf both have a medium feel. The Loom & Leaf also comes in a firm comfort level option for those that want a more supportive bed. See how they compare layer by layer.

Inside the Purple Mattress

  1. Mattress Cover: Purple uses a breathable SoftFlex cover that is a blend of polyester, viscose, and lycra. It’s stretchier than the average mattress cover so that you don’t experience a “drum” effect on the Smart Grid. It also has a non-slip bottom.
  2. Top Layer: This is the Smart Grid comfort layer that Purple is known for. All of the pressure relief in this layer comes from its unique waffle design. Hundreds of separate hollow cubes suspend your body weight and minimize tension on pressure points
  3. Transition Layer: Purple’s polyfoam transition layer is medium-soft and adds an extra measure of cushion to the mattress feel. It’s also responsive, meaning that it quickly adapts to your movements on the mattress surface.
  4. Base Layer: The base of the Purple mattress is a thick layer of high-density polyfoam. Since the two top layers are more malleable, this layer is sturdier. It reduces sagging and sinkage, as long as the bed is stored on a solid, flat foundation.

Inside the Loom & Leaf Mattress

  1. Mattress Cover: Loom & Leaf tops their mattress with an organic cotton cover. They use a breathable weave that reduces heat retention. They also treat the cover with a natural antimicrobial substance made from botanicals.
  2. Top Layer: A sheet of cooling gel memory foam sits just beneath the cover. This water-based gel reduces heat retention by neutralizing your body heat. A higher concentration of gel under your lower back creates extra support where you need it most.
  3. Comfort Layer: This second memory foam layer firms under pressure, so the natural contouring of your body is evenly supported. It’s thicker or thinner, depending on the firmness level you choose.
  4. Support Layers: These polyfoam layers increase in firmness the further down you go. They help to support the upper layers, so your spine stays aligned and your lower back is adequately supported. The high-density base layer keeps the mattress effective over years of use.

Motion Transfer

This category assesses how well a mattress isolates motion. It’s an imperative feature for couples and light sleepers who don’t want to be disrupted by movement during the night.

Purple is the clear winner in this category. Not only did it score 2.5 points higher than Loom & Leaf, but Loom & Leaf received a relatively low score. If you and your partner sleep like a rock, either bed will work fine, but if you anticipate restless nights with a combo sleeper or partner with a small bladder, Purple is a much better choice.

Edge Support

Edge Support is not always on the radar of mattress shoppers, but it is a feature that can really enhance the comfort of your sleep experience because it extends the usable surface of your bed. For example, if you and your partner both like to stretch out a night, but only have room for a queen-size bed, you can rest assured that you will be able to use the full 60” width.

Purple scored 2 points better in this category. While it’s not a deal-breaker for most shoppers, if edge support is important to you, the Purple does a great job and a significantly better job than the Loom & Leaf.

Pressure Relief

This is one of the most important categories for side sleepers and those with joint or back pain. We measure pressure relief using a pressure map that color-codes how much stress is put on different regions of the body while an average-sized sleeper lays on their side.

Again, the Purple mattress scored higher, this time by 1.5 points. If you are prone to morning aches or if you are a side sleeper, the Purple is a better fit. Back sleepers and stomach sleepers will both get adequate pressure relief on either bed, and the Loom & Leaf firm mattress is especially well-suited to back sleepers.

Cooling

Do you tend to sleep hot? The good news is that both of these mattresses do a relatively good job of tackling heat retention. The Purple mattress uses a breathable cover and top layer to keep you cool, while the Loom & Leaf adds a whole layer of cooling gel memory foam on top of their mattress.

Helpful tip: Extra light, breathable sheets will maximize the cooling potential of these mattresses. Purple even makes special stretchy sheets for their bed.

Final Impression: Which Is the Best Mattress?

We think that side sleepers, couples, and cost-conscious shoppers will like the Purple mattress the most. Back and combo sleepers will fare slightly better on the Loom & Leaf. Stomach sleepers, hot sleepers, and those with back pain will get similar levels of relief on either bed.

Ultimately, these are different mattresses with different strengths. Both offer generous trial periods and full refunds for returns (minus a $99 transportation fee for Loom & Leaf). If you need an in-home setup, you’ll get that for free with Loom & Leaf mattress purchases. There is very little risk in trying either of these beds, so choose the one that best meets your needs and give it a try!
