Compare Mattress Dimensions/Sizes
When comparing the Purple and Saatva mattress sizes, you’ll notice that the Saatva ranges from around 2” to 4” thicker. Heavier people tend to do best on a thicker mattress as they offer greater support. Keep in mind that Purple manufacturers 3 other mattresses, each of which has a thicker profile than the original. Compare What’s Inside
Let’s take a look at what you’ll find inside each of these hybrid mattresses. Understanding what each layer is made from and what purpose it serves can help you choose between these two beds.

Inside the Purple Mattress
The Purple mattress is a 3-layer hybrid mattress that combines the benefits of foam with the revolutionary Purple Grid technology. Here’s what you’ll find in each layer.
- SoftFlex Cover: The Purple cover is designed with maximum flexing abilities. The stretchy material seamlessly moves with the hyper-elastic polymer grid below. A slip-proof bottom ensures that the fabric doesn’t bunch or fall out of place. The fabric and knit are ultra-breathable to keep you cool and dry.
- Purple Grid (2”): The Purple comfort smart grid is what makes the Purple Mattress unique. This hyper-elastic polymer cradles the hips and shoulders while supporting the back’s natural curves. This proprietary material was developed to offer the pressure relief of memory foam and the support of an innerspring mattress without the negatives associated with these materials. The resulting material is truly unlike anything else on the market. This material does an incredible job of accommodating different body shapes for both side and back sleepers.
- Comfort Foam (3.5”): The transition layer of 1.8 lb polyfoam is soft and contouring, cushioning heavier parts of the body that sink through the Purple Grid comfort layer.
- Support Foam (4”): The final layer of the Purple Mattress is a high-density (2 lb.) polyurethane foam. It’s this layer that contributes stability and sturdy edge support.

Inside the Saatva Mattress
The Saatva Classic hybrid innerspring mattress is made from 5 layers of premium materials. You can select from 3 firmness levels: luxury plush, luxury firm, or firm. You may also choose between two thickness profiles: 11.5” of 14.5” .
The composition of the pillow tops and innersprings varies between the different firmness options and profiles. Here’s what you’ll find inside.
- Euro Pillow Top: A Euro top is a plush pillow top sewn seamlessly along the mattress surface for an elegant touch. The Saatva Euro pillow top has polyfoam quilted into a silky-smooth organic cotton cover. This pillow top layer is responsible for the difference between the three comfort levels. The luxury plush has a softer foam that truly cushions pressure points, the firm a less conforming foam, and the luxury plush falls in between.
- Dual Perimeter Edge Support: A high-density foam encasement lines the entire perimeter of the Saatva mattress. Saatva’s Dual Perimeter edge support system was designed for two purposes. The first is to maintain the bed’s integrity and enhance its lifespan. The second is to create a comfortable sleep experience along every inch of the mattress surface.
- Memory Foam Layer: Premium memory foam lines the lumbar region of the mattress. The layer of contouring foam cradles the hips, melting pressure away and supporting proper body alignment. We love this added layer of midsection foam for heavier sleepers and those with back pain.
- Transition Coil Layer: Along the middle of the Saatva mattress is the first layer of innerspring coils. These 14.5 gauge coils are pocketed, which means that they respond individually. As a result, motion transfer is somewhat dampened. Saatva utilizes its active wire Lumbar Zone technology to achieve impressive spinal support and alignment. Tighter coils along the middle of the mattress provide added stability where you need it most.
- Durable Steel Base Layer: Rather than use a foam base like most of their competitors, the Saatva utilizes a durable, 13-gauge coil system as their final support layer. Two layers of coils mean generous air circulation and a cool, dry night’s sleep. Ample coils also create a responsive, bouncy feel, much like that of traditional innerspring mattresses.

Verdict: Which Is the Best Mattress?
The flagship mattresses from Saatva and Purple are both fan-favorite hybrid mattresses. Each of these beds is crafted using premium materials. Because they sell directly to their customers, skipping unnecessary showroom costs, these luxury mattresses are sold at affordable prices.
So, which of these hybrid beds is best? While the Saatva Classic earned a higher Mattress Advisor score overall, each mattress has unique strengths. We love the Purple Mattress for anyone needing extra pressure relief, including side sleepers and the elderly. The Saatva is a bit more robust. Its thick profile and springy support are ideal for heavier sleepers. And the firm Saatva is the only one supportive enough for stomach sleepers.
Each of these mattresses comes with a sleep trial. This means you can try out the bed with very little (or no) financial risk. They’re both exceptional mattresses, so the best one depends on your personal sleeping needs.
