Mattress toppers are an easy, affordable way to soften up an innerspring mattress or alter the firmness level of a new mattress. You can choose from comfy materials like memory foam, latex or wool batting. In this collection of mattress topper reviews, we’re looking at three memory foam Serta mattress toppers.
Serta is an established mattress manufacturer with high profile customers like Hilton and Wyndham. You can find their toppers, mattress protectors, mattress pads, and mattress collections at retailers like Sam’s Club, Kohls, and Amazon. The toppers we’re focusing on in this review are the 4″ Pillow Top and Memory Foam Mattress Topper, the Calm 3″ Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper, and the Ideal Temperature 3″ Memory Foam Mattress Topper.
The 4” Pillow Top and Memory Foam Mattress Topper is a plush addition to any mattress. It’s made from 3” of medium firmness memory foam with a 1” pillow top. Memory foam is a great way to improve the pressure relief of any size mattress. This foam is soft and cushioning, but dense enough to keep you from “bottoming out.”
The pillow top includes a soft fabric cover that’s quilted with fiber fill measuring 1” in depth. More than anything, this layer adds extra cushion similar to the pillow top layer on some mattresses. The sides of the cover can stretch to fit mattresses up to 17” deep, and the whole cover is removable and machine washable.
Medium firmness toppers are the best for those interested in pressure point relief, specifically side sleepers. Stomach sleepers may find this topper too soft to keep their lower back aligned and are better off on a firm mattress topper.
Serta makes all of their mattress toppers with comfort in mind, but the 4” Pillow Top and Memory Foam Topper has a few special characteristics:
The Serta Pillow Top and Memory Foam topper is offered in standard mattress sizes. Note that the twin and twin xl are both an inch wider than usual (39” instead of 38”). This topper has relatively low pricing, and a lot of retailers have price matching for Serta products.
Size | Price | Dimensions |
Twin | $99.98 | 39” x 75” |
Twin XL | $109.98 | 39” x 80” |
Full | $129.98 | 54” x 75” |
Queen | $149.98 | 60” x 80” |
King | $179.98 | 76” x 80” |
Cal King | $179.98 | 72” x 84” |
Pros | Cons |
Extra Cushioning: This combo pairs a soft pillow top with cradling memory foam | If you move around a lot at night, this topper may slide across the mattress surface. |
Clean and Safe: The mattress topper cover is hypoallergenic, and the memory foam is antimicrobial. | Several customers complained of getting too hot to sleep comfortably on this topper. |
Affordable: The 4” Pillow Top and Memory Foam Mattress Topper has relatively low prices, compared with brands like Tempur-Pedic. |
The Calm 3” Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper has a pretty self-explanatory name. It’s made with gel-infused memory foam that’s intended to counter the tendency of memory foam to retain heat. The foam has a light blue coloring that’s easily concealed by the topper cover and bed sheets.
The foam is 3” thick, which is deep enough to cushion side sleepers without compromising support for back and stomach sleepers. The foam is fairly lightweight, so it easily conforms to your body.
Serta says that natural carbon fibers included in the cover fabric remove high energy electrons that cause tension in your bedding. The end goal is a balanced sleep environment and deeper sleep. Disclaimer: We’re not sure exactly how this technology works, but most reviewers say that the topper enhanced the comfort of their mattress.
The Calm Gel Memory Foam topper sports some really unique comfort technologies. Here are a few of our favorites:
The Calm Gel-Memory Foam topper is available in a wide range of sizes, including twin xl and cal king. The smaller sizes (twin through queen size) are a little more expensive than the 4” Pillow Top and Memory Foam topper, but the king size and cal king size are more affordable.
Size | Price | Dimensions |
Twin | $129.98 | 39” x 75” |
Twin XL | $129.98 | 39” x 80” |
Full | $139.98 | 54” x 75” |
Queen | $149.98 | 60” x 80” |
King | $159.98 | 76” x 80” |
Cal King | $159.98 | 72” x 84” |
Pros | Cons |
Conforming: The foam used in this topper quickly adapts to your unique shape, so your whole body is supported. | Some customers said that they overheated on this topper. |
Easy Care: The topper cover is washer and dryer safe, so you don’t have to suffer through stinky odors that can build up over long periods of use. | You may notice a “new foam” smell when you first open your topper, which should be gone within a few hours. |
Stretchy Cover: The cover fits mattresses up to 17″ deep, so you don’t need to worry about it slipping off in the middle of the night. |
The Serta Ideal Temperature 3” Memory Foam mattress topper is designed to sustain a “just right” mattress temperature. In other words, it cools off hot sleepers and warms up cold sleepers.
The topper is constructed with 3” of gel-infused memory foam and a flexible cover that can fit over mattresses up to 17” tall.
Gel does a fair amount of temperature regulation, but the real star of the show is the minerals woven into the cover. According to Serta, these minerals keep heat and humidity from building up in the foam. They call this 37.5 Technology. Customers were split about whether or not this topper helped them stay cool. Virtually no one mentioned the warming element.
The foam has a medium to medium-soft feel that works best for those with petite or average body types. We think it could effectively cushion most side sleepers and back sleepers. It may feel a bit too soft for some stomach sleepers.
The Ideal Temperature Memory Foam Mattress Topper is comfy and functional. Here’s what we like the most about it:
The Ideal Temperature Memory Foam mattress is only available in four basic sizes. It has the most affordable queen and king sizes of the bunch.
Size | Price | Dimensions |
Twin | $119.98 | 39” x 75” |
Full | $129.98 | 54” x 75” |
Queen | $139.98 | 60” x 80” |
King | $149.98 | 76” x 80” |
Pros | Cons |
Temperature Regulating: The minerals embedded in the topper cover absorb excess heat and release stored heat when needed. | Several customers complained about an off-gassing odor for the first few days of owning this topper. |
CertiPUR-US Certified: The memory foam used in this topper is free from harmful chemicals and certified for low emissions. | This topper isn’t offered in twin xl and cal king sizes. |
Easy Maintenance: The cover is removable and machine washable. |
Serta products are sold by a handful of different retailers, including Amazon and Sam’s Club. The shipping and return policies for a specific topper will depend on the retailer. Generally, Serta retailers offer free shipping and returns, though exclusions may apply.
For example, Sam’s Club offers in-store pick up, as well as shipping in 2–6 business days. You can request a free return and refund via the Sam’s Club Member Satisfaction Guarantee by calling customer service or logging into your Sam’s Club account.
Serta mattress topper warranties aren’t explicitly stated on the Serta website, but Sam’s Club lists a 10-year manufacturer warranty. We recommend reaching out to the retailer selling the topper to verify the details of the warranty.
