Best TEMPUR-Pedic Mattress Alternatives
Apr 20th, 2023 •
TEMPUR-Pedic is one of the leading brands for plush, luxurious memory foam mattresses and memory foam hybrids. The company’s signature feature is its version of memory foam, called TEMPUR Material, designed to deliver exceptional cooling and pressure relief. TEMPUR-Pedic is frequently at or near the top in customer satisfaction surveys, and many of its customers say they would recommend the brand to a friend or relative.
But with each new year, there seems to be another bed-in-a-box company vying to win over the sleepers of the world. Purple, Helix, Nectar, and Saatva are just a few of the competitors offering high-quality mattresses at a fraction of the cost of a TEMPUR-Pedic bed.
If you’re looking for a cheaper mattress that still offers quality materials and design, you’re in luck. We’ve chosen some of the best TEMPUR-Pedic mattress alternatives and compared them head-to-head. Check out our comparisons and the expert tips in our buyer’s guide to find out everything you need to know.
Best TEMPUR-Pedic Alternatives: Our Top Picks

TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt Soft | Nectar |
TEMPUR-Cloud Medium Hybrid | Helix Midnight Luxe |

TEMPUR-Cloud | WinkBeds GravityLux |
TEMPUR-Adapt Medium | Puffy Lux Hybrid |
TEMPUR-ProAdapt Medium | Purple |

TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt Soft vs. Nectar

Firmness
The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt Soft has a plush feel. Its firmness rating is at the low end of the company’s firmness scale. The Nectar memory foam mattress is a 6/10 on the firmness scale, very close to medium-firm.
Sleeping Positions
As an ultra-soft mattress, the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt Soft is best for side sleepers and lighter back sleepers (130 lbs or less) but probably not firm enough for stomach sleepers. The Nectar might not have enough firmness for stomach sleepers either but is firm enough for all other sleeping positions. Also, an 8.5/10 responsiveness score makes the Nectar a good mattress for combination sleepers who alternate positions during the night.
Pressure Relief and Spine Alignment
The mattresses seem to be pretty close in these categories. While the softer TEMPUR-Pedic bed might have a slight edge in pressure relief, the firmer Nectar looks to be the better mattress for helping keep the spine in a neutral alignment. They might not be the top choices for back pain, but each one should provide good contouring.
Cooling
Both mattresses offer relatively cool sleep for all-foam mattresses. Nectar (7.5/10 Mattress Advisor cooling score) could feel slightly cooler since you won’t sink into the top layers as far as you do with the softer TEMPUR-Pedic mattress.
Price
Nectar is an affordable brand-name mattress, while the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt Soft is one of the most advanced TEMPUR lines. As such, the Nectar mattress ($1,043 in queen-size) is a fraction of the cost of the TEMPUR mattress ($4,199).
Trial Period & Warranty
Trial Period | Warranty | |
Nectar | 365-night sleep trial | Lifetime limited warranty |
TEMPUR-Pedic | 90-day sleep trial | 10-year limited warranty |

Firmness
The TEMPUR-Cloud Medium Hybrid and Helix Midnight Luxe have comparable firmness, with each one falling at about 5/10 on the firmness scale. At medium firmness, both are softer than the typical medium-firm standard.
Sleeping Positions
Both mattresses match up well with side sleepers, back sleepers, and combination sleepers. However, their compatibility with stomach sleepers is less certain. On one hand, each is a hybrid bed that features a layer of resilient coil springs in addition to contouring memory foam. On the other hand, their medium firmness ratings suggest that they could be too soft to prevent a stomach sleeper’s midsection from sinking in too deeply.
Pressure Relief and Spine Alignment
In the Mattress Advisor sleep lab, the Helix Midnight Luxe (8.5/10 for pressure relief and 9/10 for spine alignment) scores well in both categories. We tested the all-foam version of the TEMPUR-Cloud Medium and saw similar results (9/10 for pressure relief and 8.25/10 for spine alignment). If you have back pain, either mattress seems like a good option to relieve pressure and keep you comfortably aligned.
Cooling
The Helix Midnight Luxe is the winner. It has an outstanding 9.5/10 cooling score in Mattress Advisor testing and is regularly featured as one of our best mattresses for hot sleepers.
Price
A queen-size TEMPUR-Cloud Medium Hybrid is currently priced at $2,199. At $2,099, a queen-size Helix Midnight Luxe is slightly less expensive.
Trial Period & Warranty
Trial Period | Warranty | |
Helix | 100-night sleep trial | 15-year limited warranty |
TEMPUR-Pedic | 90-day sleep trial | 10-year limited warranty |

Firmness
The DreamCloud mattress is a 6.5/10 on the firmness scale, the usual benchmark for a medium-firm feel. The TEMPUR-Probreeze Medium isn’t quite as firm but is in the same neighborhood. Both provide balanced support that won’t let you sink in too far.
Sleeping Positions
We like the DreamCloud hybrid for every sleeping position: side, back, stomach, and combination. The firmness is virtually universal, and the coil layer should provide enough support for back sleepers and stomach sleepers. The TEMPUR-Probreeze Medium matches up well with every position except for combination sleepers because of a relatively modest responsiveness score (7.5/10), although the foam/coil hybrid version could be more responsive than the all-foam model.
Pressure Relief and Spine Alignment
When we tested these mattresses, their scores for pressure relief and spine alignment were nearly identical: DreamCloud 9/10 in both categories, TEMPUR-Probreeze 9.5/10 for pressure relief and 9/10 for spine alignment. Both mattresses should do an outstanding job for people with back pain, gently contouring the hips and lower back while helping you maintain a healthy, comfortable alignment from the base of the spine to the base of the neck.
Cooling
The TEMPUR-Probreeze earns a 9/10 cooling score. The DreamCloud is nearly its equal, with an 8.5/10 score.
Price
The TEMPUR-Probreeze comes in at $4,499 for a queen, while the DreamCloud costs significantly less at $1,199.
Trial Period & Warranty
Trial Period | Warranty | |
DreamCloud | 365-night sleep trial | Lifetime warranty |
TEMPUR-Pedic | 90-day sleep trial | 10-year limited warranty |

Firmness
The Tempur-Cloud is squarely in the middle of the firmness scale, with a 5/10 rating. The WinkBeds Gravity Lux offers three firmness options: soft (4/10), medium (5/10), and firm (7/10). You choose your firmness option during the checkout process.
Sleeping Positions
The GravityLux’s firmness options make it a good match for any sleeping position. We recommend soft or medium for side sleepers, medium or firm for back sleepers, medium for combination sleepers, and 7/10 for stomach sleepers. The TEMPUR-Cloud should offer a good fit for side, back, and combination sleepers, although it might not be quite firm enough to comfortably support stomach sleepers.
Pressure Relief and Spine Alignment
The TEMPUR-Cloud and WinkBeds GravityLux earned identical 9/10 pressure relief scores in our sleep lab—high marks even for two memory foam mattresses. However, the GravityLux performs better for spine alignment (9/10 score vs. the TEMPUR-Cloud’s 8.25/10). Both seem like good options for helping people with back pain or shoulder pain sleep more comfortably, but the GravityLux’s superior spine alignment score gives it an edge.
Cooling
As in the case of other memory foam mattresses, the TEMPUR-Cloud does not rank among the best for cooling, scoring a 6.5/10 in that category. In contrast, we found the GravityLux to offer a cooler sleep experience, scoring 8/10.
Price
The GravityLux’s queen-size mattress offers a lower price point of $1,799 when compared to the TEMPUR-Cloud’s queen, which comes in at the upper end at $2,199.
Trial Period & Warranty
Trial Period | Warranty | |
WinkBeds | 120-night sleep trial | Lifetime limited warranty |
TEMPUR-Pedic | 90-day sleep trial | 10-year limited warranty |

Firmness
The TEMPUR-Adapt has a Medium and a Medium Hybrid option, with the latter feeling slightly softer. The Puffy Lux Hybrid is a 6/10 on the firmness scale, or close to medium-firm. The difference is that the Puffy mattress should feel about one level firmer than the TEMPUR-Adapt.
Sleeping Positions
We like the Puffy Lux Hybrid mainly for back sleepers and stomach sleepers. Side sleepers, especially those weighing less than 130 lbs, could find that it doesn’t provide enough pressure relief around the hips and shoulders. Combination sleepers might find it doesn’t have enough responsiveness. The TEMPUR-Adapt should match up well with most sleeping positions, although it might not be firm enough for stomach sleepers.
Pressure Relief and Spine Alignment
The TEMPUR-Adapt model promises exceptional pressure relief, a promise that could hold up particularly well if you choose the all-memory foam Medium feel. Our testers found that the memory foam/coil hybrid Puffy fell short in providing pressure relief around the hips and shoulders, although it performed better for the lower back area. For those reasons, and its solid 8/10 score for spine alignment, the Puffy Lux Hybrid could deliver good results for back sleepers with back pain.
Cooling
The Puffy Lux Hybrid, which earns a respectable 8/10 Mattress Advisor cooling score, uses a Cooling Cloud layer to keep your mattress at an optimal temperature level throughout the night. TEMPUR-Pedic keeps their mattress cool using a cool-to-touch cover.
Price
Of the two mattresses, the TEMPUR-Adapt is the more expensive option. This big-name mattress company’s queen-size bed starts at around $2,400, with a Puffy queen-size priced $200 less.
Trial Period & Warranty
Trial Period | Warranty | |
Puffy | 101-night sleep trial | Lifetime warranty |
TEMPUR-Pedic | 90-day sleep trial | 10-year limited warranty |

Firmness
The Purple mattress has a medium-firm feel, at 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. The TEMPUR-ProAdapt Medium has medium firmness, although it’s also available in Soft, Medium Hybrid, and Firm options. The Medium feel is probably 1 or 1.5 points softer than the Purple.
Sleeping Positions
The Purple is a good fit for every sleeping position except stomach sleepers. Purple’s GelFlex grid material seems to have a lot of “give” when it comes to supporting heavier parts of the body, and a stomach sleeper’s midsection could sink in too far for comfort. The TEMPUR-ProAdapt Medium might not have enough firmness for stomach sleepers but matches up well with side sleepers, back sleepers, and combination sleepers.
Pressure Relief and Spine Alignment
Our testers give the Purple solid marks for pressure relief (8.5/10), thanks to the hyper-elastic polymer grid material. Even better is its near-perfect 9.5/10 score for spine alignment. The combination makes the Purple a great choice for people with back pain, hip pain, or shoulder pain. The TEMPUR-ProAdapt Medium’s memory foam design should provide great pressure relief and better-than-average spine alignment.
Cooling
Both mattresses sleep relatively cool. The Purple earns an 8/10 cooling score in Mattress Advisor testing—better than some all-foam beds, but not as cool as the typical hybrid mattress. Purple’s grid system delivers slightly better air circulation than the TEMPUR-ProAdapt.
Price
Budget shoppers, take note: The Purple mattress ($1,399 in queen-size) costs nearly $2,000 less than a queen-size TEMPUR-ProAdapt ($3,349).

Firmness
The Saatva-made Loom & Leaf has two firmness options, Relaxed Firm (6/10) and Firm (8/10). The TEMPUR-Luxebreeze also has two options, Soft and Firm. People who prefer a medium or medium-firm feel would probably find their comfort zone with the Loom & Leaf’s Relaxed Firm option.
Sleeping Positions
The availability of firmness options makes each mattress quite versatile for sleeping positions. The Loom & Leaf’s Relaxed Firm is good for side sleepers, back sleepers and combination sleepers, while Firm is best for stomach sleepers. The Soft and Firm options for the TEMPUR-Luxebreeze match up the same way.
Pressure Relief and Spine Alignment
Although the main ingredient in the Loom & Leaf is gel memory foam, our testers give it a 7/10 pressure relief score. It performs much better for spine alignment (9/10). The memory foam TEMPUR-Luxebreeze has an identical spine alignment score but really excels in pressure relief (9.5/10). If you have back pain or sore joints, our test results suggest the TEMPUR-Pedic bed would be a better choice. Still, lightweight sleepers might find that the Loom & Leaf’s Relaxed Firm option offers more of a middle-of-the-road compromise between firmness and pressure relief.
Cooling
With a 7.5/10 cooling score, the Loom & Leaf does sleep cooler than some memory foam mattresses. On the other hand, the TEMPUR-Luxebreeze is specifically designed for cooling.
Price
The Loom & Leaf is a much better option for budget-minded shoppers ($2,099), costing a fraction of the TEMPUR-Luxebreeze’s price ($5,399).

TEMPUR-Pedic Mattresses vs Alternative Mattresses
TEMPUR-Pedic, the same brand that first brought us memory foam mattresses, has remained an industry leader for decades. Still, a number of competitors offer mattresses of comparable quality—with a few advantages of their own. Here are a few reasons to consider a TEMPUR-Pedic alternative:
- Price. TEMPUR-Pedic is one of the most expensive luxury brands. Today, there are many alternatives that offer high-quality memory foam mattresses at a lower price.
- Cooling: The “TEMPUR” in TEMPUR-Pedic refers to temperature, and the brand has made cooling performance one of its calling cards. As cool as TEMPUR-Pedic beds are, many competitors use gel-infused foam and other materials to produce their own outstanding mattresses for hot sleepers.
- Bounce and responsiveness. TEMPUR Material is incredible at supporting the spine and cushioning the body. However, it does not respond quickly to movement. It also is not a very springy foam. These attributes may deter those who move around at night or who like a bouncy and responsive mattress for sex.
- Sleep trials and returns. Many online mattress retailers offer generous trial periods (as long as a year, in some cases) with free returns. With a 90-day trial period and a fee for returns of up to $175, TEMPUR-Pedic’s policy is less generous than some other companies.
- Warranty. While TEMPUR-Pedic’s 10-year warranty is in line with the industry standard, many rival companies go above and beyond with warranties ranging from 15 years to as long as you own the mattress (a lifetime or “forever” warranty).
- White-glove delivery. TEMPUR-Pedic offers free white-glove delivery (in-home set-up of your new mattress and removal of your old one) with the purchase of select models. Saatva, maker of the Loom & Leaf and several hybrid mattresses, is one of the few competitors offering free white-glove delivery with all models.

TEMPUR-Pedic Alternatives FAQs
Is a TEMPUR-Pedic mattress worth it?
TEMPUR-Pedic is a leading mattress brand with long-lasting and well-made beds. Their mattresses are known for providing outstanding comfort, pressure relief, and very little motion transfer. In addition, many customers love TEMPUR-Pedic mattresses because of their plush, luxurious feel. These factors combine to make TEMPUR-Pedic beds worth the investment for many customers.
That said, TEMPUR-Pedic beds are pricier than many leading bed-in-a-box memory foam and hybrid mattresses. They also charge for returns and only offer a 90-day sleep trial. So if you’re looking for a budget mattress or want a more generous trial period, TEMPUR-Pedic is probably not the best option for you. The Nectar mattress is an excellent alternative for budget-conscious sleepers looking for a high-quality memory foam mattress with a full-year trial period.
What is a cheaper alternative to a TEMPUR-Pedic mattress?
You don’t have to look far to find less expensive alternatives to TEMPUR-Pedic, whose queen-size mattresses typically cost between $2,000 and $4,400. Competitors that offer lower-priced mattresses include:
- DreamCloud
- Helix
- Saatva
- Nectar
- Leesa
- Simmons Beautyrest
Even though cooling is central to the TEMPUR-Pedic brand, several cheaper alternatives also provide outstanding cooling performance. The Helix Midnight Luxe, Leesa Original Hybrid, and WinkBeds GravityLux are among the best mattresses for hot sleepers that cost less than comparable Tempur-Pedic models.
How often should you replace a TEMPUR-Pedic mattress?
TEMPUR-Pedic mattresses have a 10-year limited warranty. As a rule of thumb, you’re better off not waiting a full decade to think about a replacement.
The lifespan of most mattresses is 5-10 years. If you start to notice sagging before the fifth year of owning your TEMPUR-Pedic—or any other kind of mattress, for that matter—it’s probably time to start shopping for a new bed.
