TempurPedic Mattresses

Mattress Construction
Tempur-Pedic is the brand that brought us the beloved memory foam mattress. From their proprietary innovations in the 1990s to today, Tempur remains ahead-of-the curve when it comes to memory foam technology.
Every Tempur mattress has a plush comfort layer comprised of slow-response memory foam. When your body comes into contact with a Tempur mattress, you will feel as if you’re slowly sinking into it. Your hips, shoulders, and lower back will be cradled and your body perfectly contoured. It’s this response that delivers the exceptional pressure relief that Tempur is well-known for.
Beneath the upper comfort layer are various layers of memory foam and polyfoam that work together to keep the body properly aligned. This type of mattress is ideal for those who suffer from hip, shoulder, or back pain. It’s these areas of the body that experience cushion and pressure relief when on a Tempur mattress.
Every Tempur mattress is designed to suit the needs of different sleepers. For instance, their PRObreeze and LUXEbreeze mattresses are made using cooling innovations for the hot sleepers, while the LuxeAdapt has unique foam created for the best in contouring.
Temper even offers hybrid models of some of their mattresses. The added spring and support of innerspring coils boosts edge support and responsiveness. Tempur’s hybrids are ideal for heavyweight sleepers who need more support and couples who require a bit more bounce for adult activities.
Tempur-Cloud Collection
Tempur-Pedic has recently released the new Tempur-Cloud mattress. This all-foam mattress has a medium feel, with the upper comfort layer cushioning pressure points and the support layer conforming to the body’s curves.
The Tempur-Cloud is made using a new type of Tempur foam designed to compete in the bed-in-a-box space. It’s the most budget-friendly Tempur mattress, achieving the pressure relief and cloudlike feel that you expect, without breaking the bank.

Medium memory foam mattress
Tempur-Adapt Collection
The Tempur-Adapt collection includes two mattress versions made using the original Tempur memory foam. The first is an all foam mattress with a medium feel that truly cradles the body. This mattress is best for those who like the feel of sleeping “in” rather than “on” a mattress.
The second Tempur-Adapt is a hybrid mattress that pairs individually encased springs with their ultra-conforming memory foam. This is the best mattress for those who need a combination of pressure relief and responsiveness. Back sleepers and couples are both well-suited to the Tempur-Adapt hybrid bed.

Tempur-ProAdapt Collection
The Tempur-ProAdapt is Tempur’s most popular line of mattresses. Underneath the upper comfort layers is Tempur-APR foam, engineered for optimal pressure relief. This layer of foam makes the ProAdapt collection great for those who struggle with aches and pains.
The ProAdapt comes in four different firmness options, including three all-foam beds and one hybrid option. When you combine the pressure-relieving foam with customizable firmness, you achieve customizable relief of shoulder, hip, or back pain.
Styles:
- Soft memory foam mattress
- Medium memory foam mattress
- Medium hybrid mattress
-
Firm memory foam mattress
Tempur-LuxeAdapt Collection
The Tempur-LuxeAdapt collection uses TempurPedic’s most advanced innovations to bring sleepers the best in contouring support. The lightweight parts of the body slowly melt into the buttery surface while the heavier parts are properly supported and cradled.
The LuxeAdapt is designed for sleepers who need the ultimate pressure relief and motion isolation. The soft firmness level is ideal for side sleepers who need a plush, cloud-like surface. The firm option delivers the level of support and contouring needed by heavyweight back and side sleepers.
Styles:
- Soft memory foam mattress
-
Firm memory foam mattress
Tempur-Breeze Collection
One of the biggest complaints about all-foam beds is that they sleep hot. As the foam absorbs body heat to form to your unique shape, it can feed the heat back to you. Fortunately, recent technology allows even the hottest sleepers to indulge in memory foam’s cloudlike feel.
The Tempur-PRObreeze sleeps 3 degrees cooler than other memory foam beds, while the LUXEbreeze sleeps 8 degrees cooler. The cooling Tempur technology brings the comfort of a memory foam mattress to hot sleepers.
Styles:
- Soft memory foam mattress
- Medium memory foam mattress
- Medium hybrid mattress
- Firm memory foam mattress

Returns and Warranty
When you purchase a Tempur-Pedic mattress from tempurpedic.com, you have a 90-day sleep trial. During this period, you can return the mattress for a full refund. They do, however, charge a $175 return shipping fee.
Tempur-Pedic asks that you sleep on your new mattress for at least 30 days before initiating a return. The reason for this is twofold. First, it can take your body weeks before it adjusts to the feel of a new mattress. Second, Tempur mattresses take time to break in. Typically, a new Tempur mattress is slightly firmer than it will be after you’ve slept on it for one month or more.
Every new Tempur-Pedic mattress comes with their 10-year full replacement limited warranty. This warranty covers defects in materials or manufacturing for the first 10 years that you own your mattress.
If you experience a defect covered under the warranty, they will repair or replace it at no cost to you.
Pros
- Pressure Relief: Tempur’s claim-to-fame is their ultra-contouring foam. It’s designed to truly mold to the body, relieving pressure at areas like the hips, shoulders, and lower back.
- Motion Isolation: Tempur’s memory foam readily dampens motion transfer, resulting in a bed ideal for those who wake up when their partner moves around. Even their hybrid mattresses do a superb job of limiting motion from one side of the bed to the other.
- Great for Lightweight Sleepers: Few mattresses are soft enough for lightweight side sleepers to comfortably sink. Tempur’s foam allows even the lightest sleepers to melt in and experience full-body comfort.
- Cooling Technology: The Tempur-Pedic Breeze collection sleeps exceptionally cool for memory foam mattresses. This line of mattresses brings the contouring comfort of memory foam to hot sleepers.
- Innerspring Support: Tempur-Pedic offers multiple hybrid mattresses. Thanks to the layer of innerspring coils, these mattresses offer greater edge support and responsiveness when compared to all-foam mattresses.
Cons
- No Extra-Firm Options: Even the firmest Tempur-Pedic models achieve a firmness level of only around 7 out of 10. The soft surface is not ideal for those that prefer an extra-firm mattress.
- “Quicksand” Feeling: Tempur’s pressure-relieving foam is well-known for being hard to move around on. The sinking sensation that delivers exceptional pressure relief can also leave you feeling stuck. This sensation can make it hard to get out of bed, have sex, or move around at night.
- Can Sleep Hot: Heat retention is a property of memory foam. Unless you opt for a Tempur-Breeze mattress, the average Tempur mattress sleeps hotter than the average airbed, innerspring, or hybrid mattress.
- Expensive: Tempur-Pedic mattresses are some of the most expensive mattresses on the market. Their high price tag stands in stark contrast to the affordable memory foam mattresses that you can find from online mattress retailers. Check out our list of Tempur-Pedic alternatives for cheaper comparable options.

Mattress Construction
Sleep Number was the first company to offer luxury adjustable airbeds. With each side of double-size and larger mattresses having their own air chamber, partners are able to sleep at different firmness levels. What’s more, you can change how firm your side is from one day to the next.
Over the years, Sleep Number’s technology has advanced. Each of their mattresses now comes equipped not just with adjustability, but with SleepIQ Technology that tracks your sleep. You can use an app to learn more about your sleep habits, earning these mattresses the name “smart beds.”
Finally, most of the Sleep Number 360 smart beds now have Responsive Air Technology. In beds with Responsive Air Technology, the mattress automatically adjusts as you move during the night. The result is reliable support all night long.

Shipping
Sleep Number ships all of their mattresses with Comfort Service Home Delivery. This delivery service includes:
- Full mattress assembly
- Base assembly (if buying a Sleep Number base)
- Old mattress removal
Comfort Service Home Delivery is available in the contiguous US and Alaska. It costs $199 for most areas, but $249 in remote regions.
Because these mattresses must be assembled by a Sleep Number associate, you need to be available to receive the delivery. Sleep Number will schedule a time and date with you so you know when to expect your new mattress.
Returns and Warranty
Every Sleep Number mattress is backed with their 100-night sleep trial. From the day you receive your mattress, you have 100 nights to test it out. If you decide to return the mattress, contact Sleep Number to initiate a return.
Sleep Number does not refund their $199 shipping fee, and they charge an additional $199 return shipping fee. As a result, it will cost you $398 if you return a Sleep Number mattress.
Your new Sleep Number bed comes with a 25-year warranty that’s prorated after the first two years. This Sleep Number warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship.
Pros
- Adjustable Firmness: When you buy a Sleep Number bed, you can select your precise firmness level. This means that you can experiment to find the best feel for you. And if this changes over time or from one day to the next, you don’t have to buy a new mattress!
- Dual Air Chambers: Do you and your partner have different sleeping preferences? If so, a Sleep Number bed might be a good fit. Thanks to separate air chambers on each side of the bed, you can each find the right firmness level for you.
- Sleeps Cool: The Sleep Number airbeds are some of the coolest beds you can buy. The air chambers dissipate heat, keeping you cool and dry all night long. If you are someone who sleeps hot or struggles with night sweats, a Sleep Number airbed might be your solution.
- Motion Isolation: Because each side has its own air chamber, motion doesn’t reverberate across the mattress. This is great news for couples who easily wake up from one another’s movements.
- Large Selection: Sleep Number has mattresses that fit every sleep position. If you prefer a softer mattress, be sure to buy a Sleep Number mattress with thicker comfort layers. Simply adjusting and air within won’t make a Classic model, for instance, plush.
Cons
- Noisy: When you add or remove air from the chambers, the bed makes noise. This can be disruptive when you sleep with someone else.
- Sleeps Cool: While most people enjoy the cool sleeping environment offered by a Sleep Number bed, others can find it too cold. If you’re someone who sleeps cold, an airbed might not be the best choice.
- Cost: Sleep Number mattresses (and other smartbeds) cost more than the average mattress. For cheaper options, check out our Sleep Number Bed alternatives guide.
- Shipping Fees: Every Sleep Number smart bed costs $199 for shipping and setup. There is no option for free delivery.
Final Breakdown: Which Is Better?
Tempur-Pedic and Sleep Number both craft high-quality mattresses loved by customers across the United States. While neither company is better overall, your sleep preferences and budget play a role in which company suits your needs.
Tempur-Pedic mattresses offer the utmost in contouring pressure relief. Side sleepers and those who enjoy the sensation of sleeping “in” rather than “on” a mattress should consider Tempur’s luxury memory foam mattresses.
Sleep Number mattresses are airbeds that allow you and your partner to fine-tune your sleeping needs. These adjustable beds are most popular amongst couples with different firmness preferences. Anyone who values being able to adjust the feel of their mattress can benefit from a Sleep Number bed.
