Key Similarities

  • Both of these beds are medium-firm on the firmness scale, which is comfortable for the widest range of sleeping positions and body types.
  • T&N and WinkBeds ship their mattresses bed-in-a-box style and minimize the chance of off-gassing after unboxing.
  • The T&N Original and WinkBeds Luxury Firm mattress received similar scores for spinal alignment during our lab assessment. In other words, they both do a good job of keeping your back straight while you sleep.

Key Differences

  • The T&N Original is an all-foam mattress, and the WinkBeds is a hybrid mattress that combines a pillow top with coil layers.
  • In our motion isolation test, T&N scored 7.5/10, while WinkBeds scored 6.4/10. That means that the T&N does a better job of reducing motion transfer from one side of the bed to the other.
  • WinkBed is the more expensive mattress. You’ll pay 2-3x more for a WinkBed than for the T&N Original.
  • WinkBeds offers a generous full replacement lifetime warranty on their mattresses. T&N protects their mattress with a 10-year limited warranty.

Tuft & Needle Mattress Review Highlights

  • Budget-Friendly: Tuft & Needle intentionally passes along savings to their customers. In fact, they made our list of best budget mattresses because you get high quality at a low cost.
  • Edge Support: If you like to stretch out on your mattress, you need good edge support. The T&N Original got a score of 8.5/10 in this category, so you can spread out without rolling off of your bed.
  • Pressure Relief: Side sleepers especially need a mattress that reduces stress on pressure points. The foam layers in the T&N are contouring and conform to your unique shape.
  • Spinal Alignment: Did you know that sleeping posture is just as important as waking posture. T&N’s Original mattress does a great job at keeping your spine straight and reducing back pain.
  • More Models: Tuft & Needle offers a cooling bed (the Mint Mattress) and a bed with springs (the Tuft & Needle Hybrid).

WinkBeds Mattress Review Highlights

  • Extra-Edge Support: WinkBed says that their mattress provides 15% more sleepable surface area. The extra edge support also prevents sinkage when you sit or sleep near the side of the bed.
  • Motion Isolation Tech: The foam pillow top on the WinkBed’s mattress is designed to stabilize your body, thus reducing motion transfer and sleep disturbances.
  • 3-Step Back-Relief System: Throughout the whole mattress, WinkBed incorporates targeted support for every region of your spine. This multifaceted support system reduces muscle tension and joint pain.
  • Lifetime Warranty: For the full period of your original ownership, your WinkBed is eligible for a free replacement mattress if it’s proven to have defects covered by the warranty.
  • Easy Firmness Exchanges: During the 120-night trial period, you can exchange your original WinkBeds mattress for a different firmness level. Choose from Softer 4.5/10, Luxury-Firm 6.5/10, Firmer 7.5/10, and the WinkBed Plus 8/10.

Compare What’s Inside

Curious about what’s inside these beds? That’s what we’ll compare next.

Inside the Tuft & Needle Mattress

  • Fabric Cover: T&N encases their 2-layer mattress in a breathable knit cover. It’s soft to touch, but not removable, so use a mattress protector or spot clean only.
  • Adaptive Foam Top Layer: This 3” comfort layer is infused with graphite and ceramic gel beads to prevent the mattress from getting too hot. It’s also highly responsive—even a bit bouncy—unlike more traditional memory foams.
  • Support Foam Base Layer: The support layer on T&N’s mattress is made from durable polyfoam that has a breathable open-cell structure.
Inside WinkBed

Inside the WinkBeds Mattress

  • Tencel Mattress Cover: WinkBed uses eco-friendly Eucalyptus-derived wood pulp in their Tencel cover. They say that it is 30% cooler than linen. They also use heat dispersion technology in their fabric that draws warmth away from your body.
  • Quilted Pillow Top: The plush euro top is made of 2 layers of gel-infused memory foam. The top is thicker or thinner, depending on your firmness option.
  • Microcoil Layer: WinkBed designed this layer to give your lumbar region extra support in order to reduce back pain and spinal misalignment.
  • Lumbar-Support Pad: This is a thin layer of cotton that delivers pressure relief to the lower back.
  • Pocketed Coil Layer: The tempered spring support layer is divided into 5 zones that give targeted support to different regions of your body.
  • Edge Support System: The mattress is surrounded by firm, dense foam that prevents sagging along the edges of the bed.

Pressure Relief

One of the most important categories for mattress shoppers is pressure relief. This test measures how well a mattress reduces strain on pressure points (ex: hips and shoulders). The Tuft & Needle mattress performed better here, although the WinkBed was not far behind. Additionally, the Softer WinkBed firmness option will provide much more pressure relief than the firmer options.

Cooling

WinkBed predictably scored better for cooling. High quality hybrid mattresses are generally cooler than all-foam beds because air flows more freely through coil layers. T&N still performed well in this category, but graphite and gel-infused open cell foams still aren’t as breathable as coils.

Motion Transfer

Neither mattress scored super high in this category. The T&N scored a full-point higher, meaning it does a noticeably better job of reducing motion transfer. Fortunately, during our “wine test,” the tall-stem glass of red wine stayed upright on both mattresses, even when our testers rolled on the mattress surface.

Spinal Alignment

This is another important category to consider, particularly if you are prone to back pain. The spinal alignment score indicates how well a mattress promotes good sleeping posture. The T&N earned 8.5/10, and the WinkBed earned 8.75/10—both high scores.

Our Impression: Which Is the Best Mattress?

We think back sleepers will like the WinkBed Firmer mattress. Stomach sleepers should choose the T&N or WinkBed Luxury Firm. Side sleepers get better pressure relief on the T&N or WinkBed Softer mattress. Couples will experience less disruptions on the T&N, and hot sleepers will stay cooler on the WinkBed. Finally, T&N has more affordable prices.

If you’re still torn, keep in mind that both companies offer sleep trials and free shipping (note: the sleep trial and shipping may be different if you purchase your new bed from Amazon). If you want the feel of an innerspring mattress, remember that WinkBed lets you exchange your mattress for a different firmness level during the trial period

Plus, both companies protect their mattresses with warranties, and the WinkBed warranty is for your entire period of ownership, as long as you buy directly from WinkBed. Overall, you’ll get a good night’s sleep—or your money back—with either mattress. Choose the bed that best matches your sleep position, temperature, and budget.
