With almost 200 different bed-in-a-box mattress brands to choose from these days, it can feel overwhelming to pick the best bed at the best price. Our mission at Mattress Advisor is to make that process easy and point our readers in the right direction when it comes to choosing a mattress. We’re here to say that the Tuft & Needle has a lot to offer, especially for anyone who has high expectations for a mattress but isn’t looking to spend a lot.
It’s no easy feat to get 100,000 5-star reviews on anything. (The internet can be a brutal place.) But when you sell what’s been called “the most comfortable mattress on the internet,” it becomes easier to understand why so many people – customers and experts alike – will give Tuft & Needle their stamp of approval.
Tuft & Needle was actually one of the first major brands to offer a bed in a box. Its two co-founders had a poor experience shopping for a mattress at a retail store and decided to take matters (and mattresses) into their own hands. They designed a high-quality mattress without the steep price tag. Shipping the mattress directly to the customer’s home eliminates the unnecessary overhead fees that mattress stores need to charge to keep the lights on.
Their philosophy since day one had been simple: design a quality mattress using only the most important materials. You won’t find any added “filler” layers in Tuft & Needle’s mattresses – only premium foam layers that serve a very specific purpose.
So how can a mattress with such a simple design be winning the hearts of hundreds of thousands of sleepers? Well, there are many reasons. But we’re going to share our top three.
Buying a mattress is a pretty big deal. It’s something you’ll sleep on nearly every night for about a decade of your life, and it has a big impact on how well you sleep. So you should care about what’s in your mattress.
If you sleep on a Tuft & Needle mattress, you can rest assured that you’re sleeping on some good, quality foam.
In fact, Tuft & Needle developed their very own Adaptive® Foam layer to make sure it was up to their high standards. It provides the pressure relief and support of memory foam, and the breathability and springiness of latex. The Adaptive® Foam used in the Mint mattress is made with 30% more heat-wicking graphite than the original Tuft & Needle mattress, helping you stay cool throughout the night.
Tuft & Needle is also the only bed-in-a-box mattress retailer to manufacture their mattresses with Firesock – a material that protects the mattress from lighting on fire. Kind of a big deal if you ask us.
The fact that all Tuft & Needle mattresses are made entirely in the USA is worth something as well. The USA has some of the highest environmental, safety and quality standards when it comes to manufacturing mattresses than anywhere else in the world.
But the good news for you is that you’re not paying the high price tag that typically comes with a mattress of this quality. We’re all about a good deal, which brings us to our next point…
We don’t take mattress reviews lightly here at Mattress Advisor. Every mattress we review goes through the same rigorous 14-point testing procedure in our Mattress Lab. We’ve tested over 100 different mattresses, so we have a lot of data to compare.
We were pleasantly surprised at how Tuft & Needle’s mattresses stacked up against “higher-end” mattresses that cost twice as much. Here are some highlights from our testing:
The Mint mattress had nearly a perfect score (9.5/10) for spine alignment. Spine alignment is critical for making sure your mattress won’t cause back pain.
The Original Tuft & Needle and the Mint both scored high on pressure relief. Our pressure mapper displayed low pressure and high support, particularly around the hips, shoulders, and thighs.
Both mattresses also received high scores in responsiveness. This tests how well the mattress adjusts to your movements or changes in sleeping position throughout the night. It’s a feature that’s particularly important for combination sleepers.
If you tend to sleep hot and cooling is an important feature for you, then the Mint may be a better option for you. The Mint has enhanced features to promote airflow for a cool night’s sleep.
Aside from offering a great mattress to sleep on, Tuft & Needle is also a stand-up business, holding an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. Part of our review process also includes some “secret shopping” to determine how responsive and helpful customer service is. Tuft & Needle is one of the very few mattress brands to receive a perfect score in this area. Their team is super responsive and goes above and beyond to answer any questions and resolve issues as soon as possible.
But their efforts to create a flawless customer experience doesn’t stop there. They actually listen to customer feedback. In fact, Tuft & Needle created the Mint mattress after listening to feedback from their customers. The Mint was designed as a slightly taller and softer mattress than the original Tuft & Needle. It provides better pressure relief, particularly for side sleepers, and enhanced edge support, which is beneficial if you tend to sleep toward the edges of the bed.
With everything they do to keep customers happy, it’s no surprise that their return rate is three times less than the average bed-in-a-box retailer!
If you’re in the market for a new mattress, you can’t go wrong with Tuft & Needle. Both the Original Tuft & Needle and Tuft & Needle Mint are what we’d consider “top-tier” mattresses. And if you don’t believe us, then just listen to the 100,000 happy sleepers who love their Tuft & Needle mattress.
If you have a little extra room in your budget and prefer a cooler night’s sleep, then the Mint is a great choice – you won’t be disappointed!
*100,000 5-star reviews is an aggregate of Amazon reviews (5,209), Google reviews (13,320), and Tuft & Needle reviews (97,726) as of 10/22/2018.
We’re not sleep experts, and we don’t have PhDs in sleep disorders. We’re parents, schedule jugglers, recovering victims of all-nighters, procrastinators and overachievers… so we know a practical thing or two about the importance of a good night’s sleep. And we know first-hand how critical a good mattress is to getting quality sleep.
That’s why we’re relentless in our pursuit of providing the most comprehensive, to-the-point, and unbiased reviews of the best mattresses and bedding accessories on the market.
