  • The Tuft & Needle mattress is one of the highest-quality budget-friendly mattresses that we’ve tested.

Amerisleep Mattress Highlights

  • The AS3’s top layer is made from plush memory foam that has a deeply cradling traditional memory foam feel, reminiscent of more expensive Tempur-Pedic mattresses.
  • The Amerisleep AS3 is cool for a memory foam mattress. These cooling abilities are thanks to the technology found in its Celliant mattress cover and the breathability of its open-cell structure memory foam.
  • With generous comfort and transition layers, the AS3 offers excellent motion isolation. Those who share the bed won’t need to worry about being disturbed by their partner’s movements.
  • The AS3 now comes in a hybrid mattress model for those who need added support, a cooler mattress, or greater responsiveness. Amerisleep also crafts 4 different mattresses with firmness options ranging from soft to firm.

Layer Construction and Feel

In this section, we’re going to break down what’s inside each of these mattresses and how this influences the sleeping experience.

The Tuft & Needle mattress is a 2-layer foam mattress that measures just 10” thick. The upper foam layer is the softest, cushioning pressure points and bringing a responsive feel. Paired with the lower support layer, the T&N offers excellent edge support, spine alignment, and durability.

This medium-firm mattress registers between a 6-6.5 on the 1-10 firmness scale. Side sleepers will enjoy the ultra-soft top layer, back sleepers the balance between cushion and support, and stomach sleepers the firmness that keeps the hips from sinking into the mattress. However, due to minimal comfort layers, the T&N bed is best for sleepers who weigh less than 230 pounds.

The Amerisleep AS3 mattress is a luxury 3-layer memory foam mattress. The generous top layer of medium-density memory foam deeply envelops the body, delivering the traditional memory foam mattress feel. The zoned transition foam provides extra cushion and support where you need them most. Finally, the ultra-firm support foam adds stability.

This bed has a medium feel that registers as a 6 on the 1-10 firmness scale. With ample comfort layers, the AS3 is great for side sleepers and back sleepers who like a cushy mattress. Only lightweight stomach sleepers, however, will find the level of support that they require to keep the hips from dipping too low. This mattress works for every body type, just keep in mind that a mattress feels softer when you weigh more and firmer when you weigh less.

  • Celliant mattress cover: Designed with Celliant fabric that’s engineered to boost recovery and ease aches and pains. An added benefit? It converts body heat to infrared energy, keeping the sleeping surface cool.
  • Bio-Pur foam comfort layer: Medium-density memory foam generously cushions the body, delivering a feel that’s closer to sleeping “on” than “in” the mattress. It’s made using eco-friendly plant-based materials.
  • Affinity with HIVE transition layer: High-density polyfoam adds contouring, support, and responsiveness. Its zoned design ensures greater cushion at the pressure points and added support for the trunk.
  • Bio-Core base layer: A high-density support foam keeps the edges stable, limits sagging, and enhances longevity.

Pressure Relief

One of the most important features of a mattress, especially for side sleepers, is pressure relief. Side sleepers need a mattress that cushions their pressure points, evenly distributing body weight to reduce aches and pains at areas like the hips, knees, and shoulders.

The T&N mattress scored an impressive 8.5/10 in our pressure relief test, while Amerisleep came in at 7.75/10. This difference in pressure-relieving abilities leads us to recommend the T&N mattress to the average sleeper with pain at their hips or shoulders. However, because the Amerisleep’s surface is softer and its comfort layers thicker, it’s likely to offer superior pressure relief for lightweight and heavyweight side sleepers

Motion Isolation

People who share the bed tend to sleep more poorly than those who sleep alone. One of the primary reasons for this is that movement from one partner interrupts the deep sleep of the other.

One of the biggest benefits of all-foam mattresses is that they do a good job of absorbing motion rather than allowing it to reverberate across the mattress surface. However, not all foam beds isolate motion to the same extent.

The Amerisleep AS3 does an exceptional job of limiting motion transfer. In our motion transfer test, it scored an 8.75/10, a high enough score to suggest that it’s a good mattress for couples. The T&N’s 7.5/10 means that you’d be more likely to wake up when your partner tosses and turns, so it’s better for solo or deep sleepers.

Responsiveness

Most of us move around a fair amount at night, but combination sleepers tend to spend the most time tossing and turning. When you move from one position to the next, you need a mattress that quickly adjusts to your new position. Responsiveness refers to how quickly a mattress adapts to movement. The more responsive a mattress, the easier it is to move around.

The Tuft & Needle bed performed exceedingly well in our responsiveness test, earning an 8/10 for ease-of-movement—a whole point higher than the AS3. If you’re someone who frequently tosses and turns, the T&N will help you sleep more soundly.

Summary Review: Which Is the Best Mattress?

Looking at our testing scores, the Tuft & Needle mattress beat out the Amerisleep AS3 with a score of 8.7/10 compared to 8.4/10, thanks to its superior responsiveness and pressure relief. However, the Amerisleep AS3 has a softer, cradling feel, making it better for those who desire a luxury mattress experience.

When choosing your new mattress, consider your sleeping position and personal preferences. Tuft & Needle is an excellent budget-friendly mattress that works for the average sleeper. Amerisleep is great for couples and memory foam mattress lovers. Whichever one you choose, you’ll have 100 nights to decide if it’s the right one for you.
