Layer Construction and Feel

In this section, we’re going to break down what’s inside each of these mattresses and how this influences the sleeping experience.

The Tuft & Needle mattress is a 2-layer foam mattress that measures just 9.5” thick. The upper foam layer is the softest, cushioning pressure points and bringing a responsive feel. Paired with the lower support layer, the Tuft & Needle offers excellent edge support, spine alignment, and durability.

This medium-firm mattress registers between a 6-6.5 on the 1-10 firmness scale. Side sleepers will enjoy the ultra-soft top layer, back sleepers the balance between cushion and support, and stomach sleepers the firmness that keeps the hips from sinking into the mattress. However, due to minimal comfort layers, the Tuft & Needle bed is best for sleepers who weigh less than 230 lbs.

The Amerisleep AS3 mattress is a luxury 3-layer memory foam mattress. The generous top layer of medium-density memory foam deeply envelops the body, delivering the traditional memory foam mattress feel. The zoned transition foam provides extra cushion and support where you need them most. Finally, the ultra-firm support foam adds stability.

This bed has a medium feel that registers as a 6 on the 1-10 firmness scale. With ample comfort layers, the AS3 is great for side sleepers and back sleepers who like a cushy mattress. Only lightweight stomach sleepers, however, will find the level of support that they require to keep the hips from dipping too low. This mattress works for every body type. Just keep in mind that a mattress feels softer when you weigh more and firmer when you weigh less.

  1. Refresh Cooling Cover: Made with fiber that transfers energy away from the body, this cover keeps you cooler than traditional mattress covers.
  2. Bio-Pur Foam Comfort Layer: Medium-density memory foam generously cushions the body, delivering a feel that’s closer to sleeping “on” than “in” the mattress. It’s made using eco-friendly plant-based materials.
  3. Affinity with HIVE Transition Layer: High-density polyfoam adds contouring, support, and responsiveness. Its zoned design ensures greater cushion at the pressure points and added support for the trunk.
  4. Bio-Core Base Layer: A high-density support foam keeps the edges stable, limits sagging, and enhances longevity.

Pressure Relief

One of the most important features of a mattress, especially for side sleepers, is pressure relief. Side sleepers need a mattress that cushions their pressure points, evenly distributing body weight to reduce aches and pains at areas like the hips, knees, and shoulders.

Both mattresses came in at 7.75/10 for pressure relief, but the Tuft & Needle had a better score for spine alignment. We liked the Tuft & Needle mattress for the average sleeper with pain in their hips or shoulders. However, because the Amerisleep’s surface is softer and its comfort layers thicker, it’s likely to offer superior pressure relief for lightweight and heavyweight side sleepers

Motion Isolation

People who share a bed tend to sleep more poorly than those who sleep alone. One of the primary reasons for this is that movement from one partner interrupts the deep sleep of the other.

One of the biggest benefits of all-foam mattresses is that they do a good job of absorbing motion rather than allowing it to reverberate across the mattress surface. However, not all foam beds isolate motion to the same extent.

The Amerisleep AS3 does an exceptional job of limiting motion transfer. In our motion transfer test, it scored an 8.75/10, a high enough score to suggest that it’s a good mattress for couples. The Tuft & Needle’s similar score means it’s also a good choice for couples.

Responsiveness

Most of us move around a fair amount at night, but combination sleepers tend to spend the most time tossing and turning. When you move from one position to the next, you need a mattress that quickly adjusts to your new position. Responsiveness refers to how quickly a mattress adapts to movement. The more responsive a mattress, the easier it is to move around.

The Tuft & Needle bed performed exceedingly well in our responsiveness test, earning an 8/10 for ease of movement—a whole point higher than the AS3. If you’re someone who frequently tosses and turns, the Tuft & Needle will help you sleep more soundly.

Summary Review: Which Is the Best Mattress?

Looking at our testing scores, the Tuft & Needle mattress beat out the Amerisleep AS3 with a score of 8.7/10 compared to 8.4/10, thanks in part to its superior responsiveness. However, the Amerisleep AS3 has a softer, cradling feel, making it better for those who desire a luxury mattress experience.

When choosing your new mattress, consider your sleeping position and personal preferences. Tuft & Needle is an excellent budget-friendly mattress that works for the average sleeper. Amerisleep is great for couples and memory foam mattress lovers. Whichever one you choose, you’ll have 100 nights to decide if it’s the right one for you.
