Tuft & Needle Mattress Review Highlights

  • Value Mattress: The original T&N mattress is one of the most budget-friendly beds we’ve reviewed at Mattress Advisor. You won’t spend more than $750, even for a California King.
  • Pressure Relief: Pressure point relief is one of the most sought-after mattress features, and the T&N mattress does not disappoint. It earned 8.5/10 points in this category by lifting stress off of your shoulders and hips.
  • Spinal Alignment: The T&N mattress promotes good sleeping posture by keeping your back straight, which in turn eliminates mattress-related back pain.
  • Responsiveness: The team at T&N designed their proprietary Adaptive Foam to have the bounce-back of latex, so you never feel trapped in your mattress.
  • Multiple Choices: T&N also offers the extra cooling T&N Mint mattress, as well as the pressure-relieving T&N Hybrid mattress.

Lull Mattress Review Highlights

  • Spinal Alignment: Lull’s top score was spinal alignment, with an outstanding 9.5/10. Whether on your back or side, the Lull will keep your spine straight and minimize mattress-related back pain.
  • Pressure Relief: The Lull mattress does a good job of cushioning your pressure points, which helps you to sleep more comfortably and wake up with less muscle and joint pain.
  • Motion Transfer: Lull’s memory foam layers are designed to diffuse motion before it travels across the mattress surface. This is a really important factor for couples, light-sleepers, or anyone who anticipates disruptions during the night.
  • Edge Support: The Lull earned top marks for edge support. While often overlooked, edge support maximizes the usable sleeping surface of your mattress. It also adds the security of knowing you won’t roll off the side of your bed.
  • Ideal Firmness: As a medium-firm mattress, the Lull adequately supports all sleeping positions. Back sleepers get the support they need, side sleepers get ample cushion, and stomach sleepers get the right blend of softness and support.

Inside the Tuft & Needle Mattress

  • Mattress Cover: A stretchy, breathable fabric cover that is soft to touch.

Inside the Lull Mattress

  • Mattress Cover: A polyester-rayon fabric casing that is soft, breathable, and easily concealed under sheets.
  • Gel Memory Foam: A 1.5” comfort layer of high-quality gel-infused foam. It has a classic memory foam feel with faster response times than traditional memory foam.
  • High-Resilience Foam: A 1.5” transition layer of support foam that evenly distributes your body weight so your spine stays aligned.
  • Base Layer: 7” of durable polyurethane foam that supports the top layers of the mattress.

Motion Transfer

Our motion transfer score indicates how well a mattress isolates motion from one side to the other. Couples, especially, look for beds with good motion isolation because it means less disruptions during the night. The biggest score gap between these two beds is for motion transfer. The Lull mattress outperformed the T&N by 1.5 points in this category.

Spinal Alignment

The Lull earned 1 point more than the T&N in the category of spinal alignment. This factor is measured by tracing the straightness of our tester’s spine as she lies on her side. For both mattresses, the tester’s spine was almost perfectly straight, but there was slightly less curve on the Lull. A mattress that promotes spinal alignment can reduce back pain, just like good posture while awake can reduce neck and back pain.

Pressure Relief

The T&N and Lull were quite close in this category—they each scored high. We evaluate pressure relief with a pressure map on the surface of the mattress. Both of these mattresses showed minimal stress on common pressure points like shoulders and hips. How? The foam cradles the tester’s body, contouring around pronounced curves.

Foam mattresses have less space for heat to escape than innerspring mattresses, which is why mattress companies like Lull and T&N add cooling technology. Both of these mattresses include gel beads, which are temperature regulating. They also use open-cell foams that are high in breathability. Both beds scored about average for cooling, with Lull edging out T&N by 0.5 points. Neither bed will sleep especially cool, but you won’t be drenched in sweat either.

What We Think: Which Is the Best Mattress?

Both beds work well for all sleeping positions. Side sleepers get comparable pressure relief on either bed, but better alignment on the Lull. Couples fare decidedly better on the Lull. Hot sleepers will sleep slightly cooler on the Lull. Lastly, T&N is the better pick for budget-conscious shoppers.

Deciding the best mattress for you depends on what you need the most. Go with the mattress that meets your top 2-3 priorities. If you are still on the fence, rest assured that you have over 3 months to make a final decision and will receive a full refund for returns.

With that said, we don’t think you’ll want to return either mattress. Both are highly rated among customers and received top marks across the board in our in-depth assessments.
