Key Similarities

  • The T&N Original mattress and Saatva Classic mattresses both provide excellent edge support, which maximizes the amount of usable mattress surface space.
  • They both scored high in our Mattress Advisor lab assessment for spinal alignment, meaning our testers’ spines stayed in a straight line while resting on their sides.
  • These mattresses provide good responsiveness for combo sleepers who change position often throughout the night.

Key Differences

  • The T&N Original is an all-foam mattress. The Saatva Classic has a hybrid system with a euro top, memory foam layer, pocket coil layer, and innerspring base.
  • The T&N is offered only as a medium-firm mattress. Saatva customers can choose from different firmness levels, including plush soft, luxury firm, and firm.
  • Saatva’s prices are significantly higher than those of T&N. This is expected since Saatva is a luxury company and T&N is a budget-focused company.
  • Saatva offers many alternative models with different constructions (Saatva HD, Saatva Solaire, Saatva Youth, Zenhaven, Saatva Latex Hybrid, Saatva Modern Foam, and Loom & Leaf) while Tuft & Needle only has two others, the Mint Mattress and the T&N Hybrid.

Tuft & Needle Mattress Review Highlights

  • Budget-Friendly Prices: The T&N founders specifically designed a mattress that is both high quality and affordable. They produce all of their beds in the USA and pass along as many savings as possible to the consumer.
  • Spinal Alignment: This category is often overlooked, but it’s vital to reducing or preventing back pain. The T&N Original Mattress will keep your spine aligned, promoting good posture while you sleep.
  • Goldilocks Firmness: Remember the story about Goldilocks and the “just right” bed? It was probably medium-firm, or 6/10 on the firmness scale. This firmness level is not too soft and not too firm. It provides optimal comfort for all sleep positions.
  • Adaptive Foam: T&N developed this proprietary foam with the help of a chemist. It’s responsive like latex and contouring like memory foam. It also has a breathable open cell construction that allows hot air to escape from the foam.

Saatva Mattress Review Highlights

  • “Best of” Mattress: You know a mattress is good when it makes one of our Mattress Advisor “best of” lists. The Saatva made our lists for best hybrid mattresses, best mattress for side sleepers, and best beds for seniors
  • Spinal Alignment: This was one of Saatva’s highest scores at 10/10. If you have back pain—or just want to avoid it—you need a bed that keeps your spine in a straight line. The Saatva does this exceptionally well.
  • Cooling: A breathable mattress cover and 2 coil layers drastically improve airflow throughout this mattress. It’s a great choice for hot sleepers who want the cushion of a memory foam layer without the heat retention.
  • Durability: We gave Saatva a perfect 10/10 score for durability thanks to the resilience of the dual steel coil systems.
  • Eco-Friendly: Saatva mattresses are constructed with environmentally friendly materials like organic cotton and recycled steel. They are made with no toxic chemicals and don’t have off-gassing scents like other mattresses with memory foam.
  • White-Glove Delivery: Saatva gives you a luxury delivery experience for free. In addition to free shipping, they set up your new mattress so you don’t need to lift a finger.

Tuft & Needle vs Saatva Feel and Construction

Inside the Tuft & Needle Mattress

  1. Mattress Cover: T&N wraps their signature mattress in a soft, breathable knit cover. It allows air to flow through the fabric and open-cell foam layers. The cover is not removable, so any spills are spot clean only. Better yet, use a mattress protector.
  2. Top Layer: The T&N comfort layer is soft and squishy Adaptive Foam. It’s infused with heat-wicking graphite and cooling ceramic gel beads. T&N’s foams are also certified for low emissions and non-toxic materials by CertiPUR-US and GREENGUARD Gold.
  3. Base Layer: The second foam layer is made of dense, open-cell polyfoam. It’s firmer than the top layer, which prevents you from sinking into the mattress and also prevents sagging when used on a supportive bed frame.
Inside Saatva Classic

Inside the Saatva Mattress

  1. Euro Pillow Top: Euro tops are sewn in line with the top mattress layer, so you don’t notice the difference until you lie down. Saatva’s topper is made with plush cushioning material and organic cotton. It’s also naturally antimicrobial.
  2. Pocketed Coils: The top coil layer reduces motion transfer by absorbing energy from movement. It’s designed to respond to changes in sleeping position, so you never need to wait to get comfortable.
  3. Edge Support System: Saatva frames the mattress core with dense foam that prevents sinkage on the sides of the mattress.
  4. Memory Foam: This is the only all-foam layer in this predominantly innerspring mattress. Not only does it improve contouring around your body’s curves, but a Lumbar Zone wire frame gives your lower back extra support.
  5. Steel Coil Base: The base layer is a second steel coil system. It keeps your full body weight supported, improves air circulation, and prevents sagging.

Set-Up

One of the biggest score differences between these beds is their ease in set-up. The Saatva scored a perfect 10/10 thanks to its free white glove delivery service to the room of your choice. The Tuft & Needle’s mattresses take a little longer to set up since they come in a box and may require extra help in lifting to your desired location, earning it an 8.5/10 score.

Cooling

Both of these mattresses scored reasonably well in the cooling category. Memory foam mattresses tend to sleep warmer than hybrid mattresses. That’s also the case in this comparison, with the Saatva outperforming the T&N by 2 points. The dual coil layers do a better job of circulating warm air out of the mattress and away from your body.

Motion Transfer

This is the most important category for couples, especially if one or both partners are combo sleepers. Our motion transfer test gauges how well a mattress prevents movement on one side from traveling to the other side. Neither the Saatva nor the T&N scored remarkably high in this category, although they didn’t score particularly low either. You can expect average motion isolation on these beds.

The Bottom Line: Which Is the Best Mattress?

The T&N is better for side sleepers, unless you choose the Saatva plush firmness option. Back and stomach sleepers should pick the T&N or the luxury firm Saatva. Back sleepers will get the best support on the Saatva firm option. Lastly, budget buyers save more with T&N, and hot sleepers stay cooler on the Saatva.

Overall, you’re going to get a good night’s sleep on both of these beds. T&N gives you a 100-night sleep trial and Saatva gives you 365 nights. That’s plenty of time to test out your new mattress and see if it’s a good fit.
