Compare Mattress Dimensions

Being as both of these mattresses are manufactured by Tuft & Needle, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they come in the same mattress sizes. The one difference is that the Mint mattress is 2” thicker thanks to a transition layer not found in the T&N Original. The added foam makes the Mint mattress better for heavier sleepers.

Compare What’s Inside

Let’s take a look at what sets these two mattresses apart.

tuft needle mattress inside

Inside the Tuft & Needle Mattress

The Tuft & Needle mattress is a 2-layer all-foam mattress. It has a medium-firm feel that rates at a 6-6.5 on the 1-10 firmness scale. This firmness level is ideal for the average sleeper. However, because this mattress only has 3” of comfort foam and no transition layer, it does not offer the level of support or cushion needed by those who weigh more than 230 pounds.

The Original T&N’s top layer is made from their proprietary polyfoam called Adaptive foam. Unlike memory foam, this material balances pressure relief with a responsive feel, so you won’t get the sinking memory foam sensation. Instead, you’ll experience a balance between sleeping “on” and “in” the mattress. It’s this responsive foam that makes the T&N mattresses easy to move around on, ideal for sleepers who toss and turn.

  • Mattress cover: A light, breathable fabric that’s soft and stretchy.
  • Adaptive foam comfort layer: An open-cell, responsive foam with cooling gel to promote temperature neutrality.
  • Support foam base layer: A support layer made from high-density polyfoam limits sagging and enhances durability.

Inside the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress

The Tuft & Needle Mint mattress is a more luxurious version of the T&N Original. It has an identical comfort layer and support layer, but an additional 2” transition layer creates a noticeably different feel. The Mint is softer than the Original, rating a 5 on the 1-10 firmness scale. This medium feel is better for those who want more cushion, such elderly sleepers or side sleepers.

The additional 2 inches of responsive, cooling foam makes the T&N Mint better for combination sleepers and hot sleepers. The added support and cushion creates a mattress that works better for more body types, with those who weigh more than 230 lbs. better suited by the Mint mattress.

Another benefit of this added foam is superior support. In our in-house testing, the Mint mattress excelled at spine alignment. As such, it’s a comfortable mattress for sleepers with neck or back pain.

  • Mattress cover: A charcoal gray cover that’s soft, breathable, and luxurious.
  • Adaptive foam comfort layer: An identically plush polyurethane foam layer as is found in the Original.
  • Adaptive foam transition layer: The layer that makes the Mint mattress stand out. It brings greater responsiveness, cooling abilities, support, and cushion.
  • Support foam base layer: The same supportive polyfoam as is found in the Original mattress.

Spine Alignment

One of the most influential factors in how your body feels during the day is how well it’s supported at night. When you sleep on a bed that promotes healthy body alignment, you’re more likely to sleep peacefully and wake up without any new aches or pains.

In our spine alignment test, the Mint earned a nearly perfect 9.5/10, compared to the Original’s 8.5/10. While both of these scores are impressive, those with back pain may find greater relief with the Mint mattress.

Cooling

One of the biggest concerns people have with all-foam mattresses is that they tend to sleep hot. Without airy innerspring coils, heat can build up and be fed back to you over the night. That’s why you’ll often hear about people waking up hot and sweaty on memory foam mattresses.

Fortunately, Tuft & Needle has taken steps to keep their all-foam beds cool. From open-cell foam to graphite and cooling gel, the T&N mattresses as a whole sleep cooler than the average foam mattress.

In our cooling evaluation, the Mint earned an 8.5/10, a whole 1.5 points higher than the Original mattress. If you’re someone who sleeps hot, you’re likely to enjoy a more peaceful sleep on the Mint mattress.

Cost

One of the biggest factors for most shoppers when looking for a new mattress is price. You don’t want to break the bank, but at the same time, you want to ensure that you’re not wasting your money on a mattress that’s going to fall apart in just a few years.

Tuft & Needle mattresses are an incredible value. Each of their beds is a bargain when you compare them to similar mattresses from other companies. Plus, their durability is impressive for the price. While every T&N mattress is a good deal, the Original bed is definitely the top pick for most budget shoppers.

TLDR: Which Is the Best Mattress?

The Tuft & Needle Mint mattress is a more luxurious version of the Tuft & Needle Original mattress. With an extra 2” of cooling, responsive foam, the Mint is better for bigger bodies, hot sleepers, and those who need extra cushion.

However, the Original mattress is an incredible mattress that costs less than the Mint. This medium-firm bed is slightly firmer, something some stomach and back sleepers may prefer.

Whichever mattress you choose, your new mattress is backed by the T&N 100-night trial period—so there’s zero risk to seeing if one of these beds is right for you!
