Why the Saatva Classic Earned Editor’s Pick

Saatva’s Classic mattress is an exemplary bed that’s long dominated the online innerspring mattress market, so it’s no surprise that it’s earned our top spot for the best queen mattress. It comes in three firmness options—Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm—that allow you to customize the bed to your liking.

Most notably, it features two coil units instead of one. Pocket coils are stacked over support coils to maximize bounce, support, and overall comfort while adding to the longevity of your mattress. If you’re looking for a luxury-quality queen mattress that will last a long time, the Saatva Classic should work for you.

What’s in the Saatva Classic?

The Saatva Classic is available in three firmnesses (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm) and two heights (11.5 and 14.5 inches).

  • Euro Pillow Top. The first layer of the Saatva Classic is made up of plush foam beneath an organic cotton cover, quilted to give support in the center and treated to prevent unwanted microbial growth.
  • Memory Foam Lumbar Crown. A crest of CertiPUR-US® foam balances support and pressure relief in the lower back area.
  • First Innerspring Unit. Pocketed coils are arranged to bolster the lower back while providing more give in the surrounding areas.
  • Lumbar Zone® Active Spinal Wire. In between the two coil units is a bracing wire to promote proper spinal alignment.
  • Second Innerspring Unit. Interconnected coils act as a more traditional innerspring unit and add to the mattress’s durability.
  • High-Density Foam Rails. Around the perimeter, a series of foam rails ensure there’s no sagging around the edges.

My Take: The Saatva Classic has plenty of firmness options, but the Luxury Firm should work for just about anyone, in my opinion. It’s a great bed if you’re looking for luxury without the exorbitant price.

What I Liked

  • Great for couples – The Saatva Classic has plenty of features that make it suitable for sharing the bed with your partner. It’s got strong edges, so you can take up the entire surface area without worrying about any buckling. Its springiness is also beneficial for people wanting some more bounce in their sex life.
  • White glove delivery – Saatva offers free white glove delivery with all their mattresses. This means workers will come to your house, set up your new bed, and take away your old one.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Returns cost extra – Despite the premium delivery service, if you’re not happy with your purchase, you’ll have to pay $99 to return your bed.
  • Could isolate motion better – Two spring units in the Saatva Classic mean plenty of bounce. Unfortunately, this also means motion is going to travel more easily across its surface—not the best trait if you share a bed with a light sleeper.

Customer Reviews of the Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic rates 4.8 stars out of 5 on Saatva’s website. One negative aspect customers found with the Saatva Classic mattress is that it may feel too firm for some users, while a notable advantage is its high-quality materials, providing durability and support.

Why the Emma Hybrid Comfort Earned Best Cheap Queen Mattress

The Emma Hybrid Comfort is at the front of the pack when it comes to affordable queen-size mattresses—and it’s a hybrid, to boot. Its budget-friendly price nets you three layers of foam atop an especially robust coil unit that can accommodate a range of sleepers seeking support.

This bed is quite firm, falling at a 7 on our firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest mattress in existence). The support and firmness of this hybrid are great for back and stomach sleepers, as well as heavier folks who tend to sink into typical mattresses.

What’s the Emma Hybrid Comfort Made Of?

The Emma Hybrid Comfort is 13 inches tall with seven total layers.

  • Layer 1 – Top Cover. At the top of the bed is a moisture-wicking cover.
  • Layer 2 – Airgocell® Foam. This specialized foam aims to draw in and release heat, unlike traditional foams that overheat easily.
  • Layer 3 – Memory Foam. This layer of memory foam helps with motion isolation as it contours to your body shape.
  • Layer 4 – HRX Foam. “High Resiliency Extra” foam is a denser foam that contributes to the bed’s signature firmness.
  • Layer 5 – Innerspring Unit. The coil unit is zoned into seven areas for specialized support, and its pocketed coils are strong enough to elevate most body types.
  • Layer 6 – Base. A layer of durable foam acts as the foundation for the mattress.
  • Layer 7 – Lower Cover. Designed to resist slipping, this lower cover also has handles for easy maneuvering.

Emma Hybrid Mattress Dimensions

HeightNumber of LayersProduct WidthProduct Length
13″760″80″

My Take: The Emma Hybrid Comfort surprised me during testing because it’s a pretty firm and supportive bed, but it gave a comfortable kind of lift. There was even some notable pressure-relieving capability shown on our pressure maps, which is unusual for beds that feel this firm. Even so, this mattress should work best for stomach sleepers, back sleepers, and sleepers over 200 pounds—side sleepers, steer clear.

What I Liked

  • Pretty good motion isolation – Egregious movements might shake the bed a bit, but when it comes to small shifts, you should be all good. This makes it a safe option for couples who don’t stir too much.
  • Solid alignment – The Emma Hybrid Comfort’s firmness gives it an edge when it comes to keeping your spine in the right position. A neutral spine alignment should help with preventing aches and pains that can result from lying at awkward angles.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Not the best for side sleepers – This same firmness may feel a bit too unyielding to side sleepers. They’re going to need some sink to relieve pressure buildup, which the Emma Hybrid Comfort doesn’t have much of.
  • Makes a bit of noise – During testing, I noticed this bed made a crinkling noise when you moved around on it—something to consider if you’re sensitive to noises while you sleep.

Customer Reviews of the Emma Hybrid Comfort

As of late 2024, the Hybrid Comfort is a relatively new bed in Emma’s lineup. There aren’t a ton of reviews on the Emma site yet, but the ones that have been submitted give the bed a perfect 5 out of 5 stars.

Why the Helix Midnight Earned Best Queen Mattress for Pressure Relief

The Helix Midnight is a popular hybrid mattress that prioritizes pressure relief. Its 12-inch profile and medium-firm feel should work well for both dedicated side sleepers and couples sharing a bed. Its foam layers are designed to support and adapt to your body’s contours, taking the strain off of joints and other overburdened areas.

Furthermore, these foams are surprisingly good at isolating motion, which should benefit sleepers with partners who toss and turn.

What’s the Helix Midnight Made Of?

The Helix Midnight is 11.5 inches tall with six total layers. The foams in this bed are also CertiPUR-US® certified, ensuring they meet strict health and safety standards.

  • Layer 1 – Cover. The standard cover is soft to the touch, but you can upgrade to a cooling cover with GlacioTex™ fibers for an added fee.
  • Layer 2 – Memory Plus Foam. This foam layer gives the bed its pressure-relieving surface.
  • Layer 3 – Helix Responsive Foam. A medium feel, bouncy foam both contours to your curves and reacts quickly when you shift around.
  • Layer 4 – Helix Responsive Foam. A second layer of this responsive foam serves as a buffer between you and the coil layer below.
  • Layer 5 – Coil Unit. Wrapped coils react individually to movement. They’re reinforced on the long sides of the bed for edge support.
  • Layer 6 – DuraDense Foam. At the bottom of the mattress, a dense foam rounds out the support features.

Our Take: “We used a pressure map that shows weight distribution and found that [Midnight] evenly distributes weight, which helps to keep pressure off of the hips and shoulders of side sleepers. Big thumbs up for me here.” Loren Bullock, Lead Product Tester

What We Liked

  • Versatile – The Helix Midnight’s medium-firm feel allows it to work for a variety of body types and sleeping positions. This also helps for co-sleepers with different preferences looking to compromise on a single firmness level.
  • Bouncy and motion-dampening – The Midnight manages to achieve both an enviable springiness and an ability to isolate motion. This is a rare combination in hybrid mattresses, and it should especially benefit couples.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Not for memory-foam lovers – There are some comfortable foams on top of the Helix Midnight that offer lovely pressure relief, but the coils in this bed make it have more of a lifted feel—rather than the “hugging” sink of an all-foam mattress.
  • Not for stomach sleepers – Sleepers who prefer to lie on their stomach might find that the Midnight is still too soft for their liking. They’ll need something firmer to get proper support under their hips.

Customer Reviews of the Helix Midnight

The Helix Midnight rates 4.5 stars out of 5 on Helix’s website. The main negative is that reviewers tend to find it too soft for their liking and feel as though they’re sinking. But overall, users say they’re getting a great nights’ sleep and some pain relief.

Why the WinkBed Earned Best Queen Mattress for Back Pain

Whether you’re a die-hard hybrid fan or want to try one out for the first time, the WinkBed is a fantastic queen-sized option. Even more attractive for sleepers with sore backs, the WinkBed incorporates multiple lumbar-focused features, including a LumbarLayer™ of supportive foam and zoned coils that give this region a specialized amount of lift.

The WinkBed is available in multiple firmness levels (Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm, and Plus), offering customers with back pain a helpful degree of customization. It also should work for couples sharing a bed, with strong edges, a sturdy firmness, and plenty of bounce.

What’s the WinkBed Made Of?

The WinkBed is available in four firmnesses: Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus. It’s about 13.5 inches tall.

  • Tencel™ Cover. Made of fibers derived from eucalyptus wood pulp, the surface of the mattress is soft, moisture-wicking, and eco-friendly.
  • Euro Pillow Top. Foam quilted into the cover provides initial cushioning, and the inclusion of gel should help keep you cool.
  • Transitional Foam Layers. A series of specialized foams complete the bed’s comfort layers and lead into the springs below.
  • Innerspring Unit. The coil layer features zoned support, with five zones providing different levels of pushback to ensure good body alignment.

Our Take: “I also score the WinkBed high in pain relief. The pressure-relieving foams and zoned support work to keep your body weight evenly distributed, and the built-in lumbar support helps to prevent back pain.” – Loren, Lead Product Tester

What We Liked

  • Customizable – The WinkBed has a whopping four total firmness options. Lightweight sleepers and those who sleep on their sides may prefer the Soft model, while back and stomach sleepers should consider the Luxury Firm or Firm options. The Plus model is designed to support sleepers over 200 pounds. Luckily, a 120-night trial allows for plenty of time to decide what you like best.
  • Should last long – This bed’s sturdy construction is built for support, but we also think it makes for a long-lasting bed. WinkBed certainly agrees, as they give you a lifetime warranty with your purchase.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Sub-par motion isolation – Loren noted the one spot where the WinkBed could improve is its ability to dampen notion: “Because of its overall bouncy nature, when your partner tosses and turns or gets up out of bed you feel everything. So, light sleepers should be aware of that.”
  • No cradling foam – The WinkBed will keep you elevated, which is a boon for most, but a lot of sleepers prefer to feel swaddled by their mattress. If you want to sink into your mattress, choose an all-foam option.

Customer Reviews of the Winkbed

On the WinkBeds site, the WinkBed earns a 4.8 out of 5 stars. One drawback of the WinkBed mattress is that it might be too expensive for budget-conscious shoppers, but overall it offers excellent durability and customizable firmness options.

Why the Nolah Signature Earned Best Queen Mattress for Side Sleepers

The Nolah Signature is rated a 4 out of 10 on our firmness scale, so it’s an excellent fit for side sleepers and anyone looking for pressure relief. Nolah maximized its cushioning by adding 75 percent more AirFoam™ to this bed than you can find in its Original model, and the difference is palpable: Emma said that sleeping on her side on this bed was “like a dream.”

The Signature should work for couples who are light sleepers too, thanks to its stellar motion isolation. Finally, it’s also surprisingly cool for foam. These qualities make it a unique choice for side sleepers seeking a pillowy queen bed.

What’s the Nolah Signature Made Of?

At 12 inches thick, the Nolah Signature has five layers.

  • Layer 1 – Organic Cotton Cover. Cotton is naturally breathable and soft, making for a cool and comfortable sleep surface.
  • Layer 2 – Plush AirFoam™ (2.5 inches). This soft foam layer keeps up the cool while providing cushion.
  • Layer 3 – Active Response Foam (1.5 inches). A bouncy layer of foam responds to movements while allowing air to flow through the bed.
  • Layer 4 – Firm AirFoam™ (1 inch). This firmer foam layer aids in supporting the above comfort layers.
  • Layer 5 – High-Density Foam Foundation (7 inches). A dense foam base stabilizes the mattress.

12″560″80″

Our Take: “The Nolah Signature is a softer mattress, so it’s going to excel for side sleepers who want pressure relief in their shoulders and hips.” Emma Mattei, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Reduces motion transfer – The Nolah Signature is an all-foam mattress that excels at motion isolation, making it an excellent option for couples looking for a soft queen-sized bed.
  • Cooling capability – The proprietary AirFoam™ layer has cooling properties, and should help prevent the mattress from overheating. The Nolah Signature also has a moisture-wicking cotton cover that’s cool to the touch, which should further stave off night sweats.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Lacking edge support – The Nolah Signature doesn’t have any specialized reinforcement along the perimeter, so the edges lack support. You’re likely to sink when you sit or lay near them.
  • Too soft for some – The Signature’s plush feel may work for most side sleepers seeking pressure relief, but it won’t work for everyone. Heavier sleepers may require a firmer mattress to support them.

Customer Reviews of the Nolah Signature Mattress

The Nolah Signature gets a 4.8 out of 5 stars on Nolah’s website. One potential drawback of the Nolah Signature mattress is its limited firmness options, but it excels in providing exceptional pressure relief and a cooling sleep experience.

Why the Brooklyn Bedding Sedona Elite Earned Best Medium-Firm Queen Mattress

Medium-firm mattresses offer a soft-yet-supportive feel that appeals to most sleepers. Many people who opt for a queen-size bed sleep next to a partner, and a medium-firm mattress should most likely work for both individuals.

The Arizona-based Brooklyn Bedding brand embraces their home state (but not its heat!) with their Sedona Elite mattress. The Elite’s medium-firm feel should strike the ideal balance of firm support and plush pressure relief, incorporating multiple foam layers and two coil units.

What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Sedona Elite Made Of?

The Brooklyn Bedding Sedona Elite is 14 inches tall and has six layers.

  • Layer 1 – Cooling Cover. GlacioTex™ fibers keep the surface of the mattress cool.
  • Layer 2 – Copper Memory Foam (1.5 inches). The copper infused into this foam layer naturally deters microbes and regulates temperature.
  • Layer 3 – Micro-Wrapped Coils (2.5 inches). A series of miniature coils mitigate pressure buildup.
  • Layer 4 – Transition Foam (1.5 inches). This hyper-dense foam layer eases into the second coil unit.
  • Layer 5 – Ascension® Coils (8 inches). Encased coils respond individually for enhanced motion isolation and also reinforce the edges of the mattress.
  • Layer 6 – Foam Base (1 inch). A dense foam base supports the mattress and extends its durability.

Our Take: “We rank this mattress at a medium feel: not too soft, not too firm. This bed is particularly good for back and side sleepers. As Goldilocks would say, it’s just right.” – Emma, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Plenty of responsiveness – The bed’s coil units should not only provide substantial support, but also foster bounce to help with repositioning.
  • Pretty cool – The Sedona Elite has a myriad of features that contribute to its cooling capability. The first mini coil unit plus the bigger unit on the bottom of the mattress both contribute to airflow. The copper gel infused into the foam on top also works to keep the material cool alongside the GlacioTex™ cover.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Not a budget option – The Sedona Elite is priced similarly to a luxury mattress, perhaps not the best for shoppers wanting to save. Before sales and coupons, a queen retails for about $2,400.
  • Some sleepers need more firmness – We think that stomach sleepers may prefer a bed with a firmer profile to keep them better lifted.

Customer Reviews of the Sedona Mattress

On Brooklyn Bedding’s website, the Sedona Elite ranks 4.8 out of 5 stars. One potential drawback of the Brooklyn Bedding Sedona mattress is its higher price point, but customers noted that it offers exceptional comfort and support, particularly for those seeking a luxury sleep experience.

Why the Bear Star Hybrid Earned Best Firm Queen Mattress

If you’re someone who prefers a firmer bed, consider the Bear Star Hybrid. This mattress contains premium responsive materials designed to keep you well-supported and buoyed on top of its layers. Underneath the comfort foams, the bed’s robust coil unit should deliver some springiness while keeping you supported.

Couples looking to share a queen should also appreciate the bed’s versatility and its ability to mitigate overheating.

What’s the Bear Star Hybrid Made Of?

The Bear Star Hybrid is composed of five layers and is 13 inches tall.

  • Layer 1 – Cover. The Bear Star Hybrid has an innovative textile known as Celliant® in its cover, which reportedly can improve muscle recovery by converting kinetic energy into infrared light. HydroCool® technology also helps keep the surface cool.
  • Layer 2 – Serene Gel Foam. A cooling foam relieves pressure buildup at the mattress surface.
  • Layer 3 – Responsive Comfort Foam. This foam layer adjusts to your body and movements while allowing air to flow through it.
  • Layer 4 – Innerspring Unit. Individually wrapped coils provide reinforced lift, and stronger coils along the perimeter of the mattress create sturdier edges.
  • Layer 5 – High-Density Support Foam. This durable foam base rounds out the mattress’s support components.

Our Take: “The responsive comfort foam offers exceptional pressure relief and support, adapting to all sleeping positions.” Stuart Petty, Sleep Advisor Mattress Tester

What We Liked

  • Plenty of cooling components – The Bear Star Hybrid is an attractive option for hot sleepers. First, its cool cover has advanced technology to convert your excess body heat into infrared energy (which then reportedly promotes muscle recovery). Gel in the topmost foam layer further regulates temperature, while the pocketed coils encourage airflow throughout the mattress.
  • For tossing and turning – The firm feel of this bed is also particularly suited to combination sleepers, who can more easily shift during the night when they’re not “stuck” inside a too-soft surface.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Can feel too firm – If you’re looking for a firm mattress, you’re set with the Bear Star Hybrid—but if you’re a lightweight sleeper, the surface may not have enough give for a comfortable sink.
  • Not the best edges – We weren’t particularly impressed by the Bear Star Hybrid’s edge support. Steer clear if you like to sleep or sit near the edges.

Customer Reviews of the Bear Star Hybrid

Coming in at approximately 4.5 out of 5 stars on Bear’s site, a potential downside customers noted of the Bear Star Hybrid mattress is that some users may find it too firm, but it is praised for its strong support and cooling properties, promoting a comfortable sleep environment.

Why the DreamCloud Earned Best Luxury Queen Mattress

If you’re looking to upgrade your sleep space, DreamCloud’s flagship model is a luxury hybrid with plenty of appealing features. The DreamCloud has an impressive 14-inch frame, and inside the mattress is a blend of high-quality foams and coils. On top is a cashmere-blend cover, providing opulent softness that you can feel.

DreamCloud mattresses also come with one of the industry’s best consumer deals: a year-long trial and a forever warranty. For that much luxury, it comes in at a nice price, so you won’t have to break the bank for a high-end mattress.

What’s the DreamCloud Made Of?

The DreamCloud has seven layers in its 14-inch construction. The foams it uses are all CertiPUR-US® certified.

  • Layer 1 – Top Cover. The cashmere-blend material on top provides resilience, absorbency, and softness.
  • Layer 2 – Soft Foam (1.5 inches). A soft poly foam is quilted into the cover for added plushness at the top.
  • Layer 3 – Gel Memory Foam (1 inch). This foam should feel cooler than typical memory foam, delivering a cozy cradle and soothing your pressure points.
  • Layer 4 – Transition Layer (2 inches). A dynamic foam layer encourages proper alignment while making sure the coils don’t poke through the comfort layers.
  • Layer 5 – Coil Unit (8.5 inches). Individually wrapped coils make up the supportive innerspring unit, with thicker coils along the edges.
  • Layer 6 – Base Layer (1 inch). Standard foam acts as a foundation for the mattress.
  • Layer 7 – Lower Cover. This bottom cover keeps everything in place and has handles to help with moving it around.

My Take: The DreamCloud is one of my all-time favorites as a stomach sleeper.. It’s the pinnacle of support, affordability, and value. If you want a luxury bed that’ll keep you lifted all night, you’re set with DreamCloud.

What I Liked

  • Affordable luxury – I’m always surprised that the DreamCloud doesn’t cost a ton of money, especially when you consider the quality of the bed and the variety of features you’re getting along with it. A queen model will cost you only around $1,300—and that’s before sales and coupons.
  • Support in every position – I tested out every position (back, side, and stomach) on the DreamCloud and felt lifted in each. It was also pretty easy to switch between each of them.

Potential Drawbacks

  • Edges are lacking – Despite the DreamCloud having thicker coils around the perimeter, I wasn’t particularly impressed by the edges. Laying down near them was fine, but sitting, it was hard to ignore the sagging.
  • Little contouring – The lifted feeling of the DreamCloud isn’t for everyone. It won’t cradle or contour to your body like an all-foam bed.

Customer Reviews of the DreamCloud Mattress

The DreamCloud Original scores a solid 4.7 out of 5 stars among customers on its site. One potential downside of the DreamCloud Original mattress is its weight, making it challenging to move or rotate, but it offers excellent support and comfort for those who prefer a medium-firm feel.

What is a Queen Mattress?

A Queen mattress is 80 inches long by 60 inches wide. It’s notably larger than a Full-size mattress and narrower (but not shorter) than a King.

Queen beds are big enough for many couples to sleep side-by-side comfortably, and they are considered one of the most commonly found mattress sizes in American bedrooms.

What to Look for in a Queen-Size Mattress

The material that your Queen-size mattress is made of is ultimately going to determine its feel. Elements like bounce, responsiveness, sinkage, contouring, and firmness can all depend on the type of mattress you buy.

Type of Mattress

Innerspring Mattresses

Innerspring mattresses have come a long way since their first inception. Today’s innerspring beds typically have coils made from durable steel and are pocketed in fabric sleeves, which help muffle noise and motion. See our favorite picks in our list of the best innerspring mattresses.

Coils will add support, bounce, and airflow to a Queen mattress, but depending on the bed’s initial comfort layers, innerspring models may feel too firm or reactive to some sleepers.

Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses have both springs and foam in their construction. Thanks to the coils, they typically have great support and cooling capabilities. These benefits are coupled with pressure relief and plushness on the surface from their foam layers.

Hybrid Queen beds are therefore quite versatile and give sleepers a little bit of everything. They can be more expensive than other mattress types, however.

A hybrid mattress interior, tested by Julia Forbes

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam is a type of poly foam with a high viscosity and density, meaning it slowly but soothingly conforms to your body when you lie on top of it. Memory foam beds are known for providing superior motion isolation and pressure relief.

Many modern memory foams also include gels within their structure to enhance their cooling properties. Without gels or other temperature-regulating additions, memory foam can easily overheat.

Latex Mattresses

Latex foam layers are made from the processed sap of rubber trees and provide a more eco-friendly alternative to poly foams. You’ll typically see two types of latex foam: Dunlop and Talalay. They differ in how they’re manufactured, with Dunlop typically the firmer of the two.

Latex Queen beds excel at combining responsiveness with pressure relief. However, because they often have many certifications around their natural and/or organic materials, latex mattresses can be relatively pricey.

Other Considerations When Shopping for a Queen Mattress

Sleeping Position

Back sleepers will likely do well on a mattress that is not overly firm or soft. They want a bed that evenly supports their weight while filling in the space between their hips and shoulders.

Side sleepers can experience intense pressure buildup in their hips and shoulders as these areas bear lots of weight across a comparatively small surface. Therefore, these people tend to enjoy a softer mattress that relieves pressure and contours to their curves.

Stomach sleepers often prefer a firmer sleep surface, particularly one that can support their hips to keep their spine well-aligned.

Julia Forbes testing a mattress for side sleeping
Testing the mattresses in side sleeping position

Combination sleepers will probably prefer a bed that has a medium-firm feel as this “neutral” firmness has the most universal appeal. Combination sleepers should also enjoy a bed that has higher responsiveness because a slightly bouncy surface can help facilitate repositioning.

Weight/Body Type of Sleepers

A Queen mattress’ weight capacity will tell you how many pounds it can hold without sustaining damage or starting to sag. If you’re a heavier person or you plan on sleeping with a partner, this is an important detail to know.

Many mattress companies also offer beds designed for heavy people. These mattresses have stronger support components and a firmer feel than other models.

Firmness

Mattress firmness is rated on a scale from 1-10, with 10 being the firmest feel. Your sleeping position, body weight, and individual comfort preferences will all influence which firmness feels best to you.

In general, we recommend steering clear of Queen mattresses that are extremely soft as they likely won’t be able to offer enough support. High-quality mattresses will marry pressure-relieving features with robust foundations so that even their plushest models keep your spine well-aligned.

Plus-size sleepers will usually experience a given bed as softer than a petite person does because a larger body sinks deeper into a mattress. For this reason, we recommend firmer beds for heavy people and softer beds for lightweight people. For most sleepers, including couples, a medium-firm mattress should work well.

Want to know more? Check out our complete mattress firmness guide.

Cooling

A Queen-size mattress with cooling features will keep you more comfortable than one that’s prone to retaining heat. Cooling elements can range from gel-infused foams to vented covers and gussets.

Some cooling mattresses also use newer technologies in their construction that can help regulate the temperature of your sleeping environment. Phase-change materials, for example, absorb excess heat and then release it when the surroundings become too cold.

Julia Forbes testing how fast a mattress cools down
Testing the cooling abilities of the mattress

Motion Isolation

If you’re easily woken up by a partner’s movements during the night, you’ll want to look at Queen beds with good motion isolation. Foams in particular do well at limiting the transfer of motion from one part of a mattress to another. Springs, on the other hand, aren’t as good at keeping the surface of the bed still.

Testing Motion Isolation in a Mattress
Here I’m performing a motion isolation test.

Sex

A Queen-size mattress is often considered the ideal size for couples as it allows couples the choice between space and closeness. With that in mind, Queen beds also have a lot to offer when it comes to having sex.

Couples are met with a bed that gives them plenty of room to reposition without feeling like they may fall off. The type of Queen-size mattress you choose can also enhance sex. Latex, innerspring, and hybrid mattresses are responsive and buoyant for easier repositioning. However, the slow-moving nature of memory foam may make people feel stuck during intimacy.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief refers to a mattress’s ability to ease the strain on the parts of your body that endure the most weight or downward force as you sleep. A Queen bed with good pressure relief will make your muscles and joints feel soothed rather than sore.

Certain materials are better for pressure relief than others. Memory foam, latex foam, and other poly foams often provide the most profound pressure relief, whereas springs can feel too “poky” or firm without a pressure-relieving layer above them.

Julia Forbes testing a mattress for pressure relief
In the lab performing pressure map tests

Edge Support

Edge support is another feature that’s especially important in mattresses for couples. If you’re going to share a Queen bed — or if you’re someone who’s prone to sleeping on the edge of your mattress — you’ll probably benefit from a reinforced perimeter.

Mattresses can derive edge support from thicker coils or higher-density foam along their borders. Sometimes only the long edges of a bed are reinforced, whereas other models offer edge support on all four sides.

With decent edge support, you won’t feel like the sides of your Queen mattress dip or sag when you sit or lie on them. You’ll therefore be able to use more of the mattress’ total surface area.

Budget

Your budget will also inform which model of Queen-size mattress you buy. Luxury models, as well as hybrid and latex beds, will be costlier than more traditional innerspring and all-foam mattresses.

Expect to pay between 1,000 and 2,000 dollars for a modern Queen bed or more for one with standout features. Be skeptical of any mattress that’s priced extremely low without a lot of information on its construction.

You can likely find budget-friendly Queen mattresses during certain holiday sales or promotions, so plan your purchase wisely.

Who Should Buy a Queen Bed?

Many people view a Queen-size bed as an appealing upgrade from an older, smaller mattress. You might consider springing for a Queen mattress if:

  • You’re an individual who wants more space than a Full-size bed can offer
  • You move a lot in your sleep and sometimes find yourself at the edge of your bed
  • You’re part of a couple and need more room in a bed you’ll share with your partner
  • You want a big bed for your master bedroom, but there isn’t enough space for a King
  • You want to offer guests a luxurious amount of sleeping space when they stay over

Still unsure about this size? Below, we’ve outlined the basic benefits and potential disadvantages that come with purchasing a Queen mattress.

Queen Mattress Pros

  • They provide a lot of surface area while still fitting in modest living spaces
  • They give you room to spread out or roll around without falling off
  • They enable partners to sleep close together or with a bit of room between them
  • Their generous surface area can dampen motion transfer
  • They provide enough space at the foot of the bed for small pets to sleep
  • They fit through most doorways

Queen Mattress Cons

  • They’re not as wide as a King-size bed and may not have enough space for very restless sleepers
  • They may be too big for tiny bedrooms
  • They’re costlier than smaller sizes and can be slightly more difficult to transport
  • If you’re in a couple with kids that sometimes climb into bed with you, a Queen might feel cramped
  • Very tall folks might need even more length to their mattress
  • If you and your partner have drastically different comfort preferences, a Split Queen is tougher to find than a Split King

Queen Beds vs. Other Mattress Sizes

If you’re weighing the merits of a Queen mattress against those of a different size, consult our comparisons below.

Queen vs. King Bed

A King bed is larger than a Queen-size one but also demands more space and money. The below table sums up the differences between King and Queen-size mattresses.

Best Queen Mattress FAQs

Can a Queen mattress fit on a Full bed frame?

No, it is not advisable to put a Queen mattress on a Full bed frame. A Queen bed is generally 60 inches by 80 inches and a Full size is around 54 inches by 75 inches. This may mean that your bed would not be securely supported.

What are the dimensions of a Queen-size mattress?

A standard Queen-size mattress is 80 inches long and 60 inches wide.

How do I choose the best Queen mattress?

Start by researching your own sleeping habits. Identify your primary sleeping position, your firmness preferences, and the features you most appreciate in a bed. If you sleep with a partner, take their tastes into account as well.

From there, set a budget and look for Queen-size mattresses that hit all of your must-haves and some of your nice-to-haves. Consult our buyer’s guide above for help in isolating the factors that are most important to you as you shop.

What’s the best Queen mattress for the money?

Ultimately, the best mattress for the money will be a quality bed within your budget that suits your individual needs. To help get more bang for your buck, though, we recommend purchasing during major holidays since mattress companies offer even more savings on top-tier beds.

How much is a Queen-size mattress?

On average, a Queen bed costs approximately 1,500 to 2,000 dollars.

Some models cost more or less than this range, too, depending on their construction and features. Particularly luxurious Queen mattresses can cost several thousand dollars, whereas basic all-foam models might be around 800 dollars or less.

Is a Queen mattress good for couples?

Yes, a Queen mattress is a great choice for couples. It’s typically both wide and tall enough to accommodate two sleepers, and may even admit a pet or two. Couples who have shared a Full-size bed in the past are often much happier and more comfortable once they switch to a Queen.

However, if you sleep next to someone who’s particularly tall, or if one or both of you tend to move a lot at night, you may want to consider a King-size mattress for the additional space.

How much does a Queen-size mattress weigh?

A typical Queen bed weighs about 100 pounds, but some Queen-size models can weigh more or less than that depending on their components. Check the product details while you browse so that you know exactly how much your mattress will weigh.

Which is better, a Queen or King bed?

No one size will be universally superior for all people. A Queen-size mattress is less costly and takes up less room than a King, but a King-size mattress gives you more space to spread out. You should weigh considerations such as budget, sleeping style, and bedroom size when deciding between a Queen and a King bed.

Are all Queen mattresses the same size?

Surprisingly, no. Just as the California King is a subtype of the King-size mattress, Queen beds are available in a few variations.

  • Standard: The standard Queen is 60 inches by 80 inches and is the most common model that shoppers will find on the web and in retail spaces.
  • Olympic: The Olympic Queen bed is 6 inches wider than your standard Queen mattress. It measures 66 inches by 80 inches, giving sleepers a little more room to spread out.
  • California: Sometimes known as a Queen XL, California Queens are a rare find. They measure 58 inches by 82 inches, offering sleepers a bit more legroom.
What is a Split Queen mattress?

A Split Queen bed (sometimes called a Dual Queen) consists of two independent “halves” that measure 30 inches wide by 80 inches long. Just like a Split King mattress, a split Queen mattress accommodates members of a couple who differ in their comfort preferences. However, this type of Queen bed is not as common as the split king.

Conclusion

A queen-size mattress can be a lovely choice for anyone who craves more sleeping space but doesn’t want to commit to the bulk and price of a king. Its dimensions make it an appealing product for couples and individuals alike, and it’s often considered the “default” mattress size for adults.

We hope the recommendations above will help inform your shopping decisions as you search for the best queen bed for your home.
